The Dungeness River Nature Center Executive Director is responsible for achieving the Mission, advancing the Strategic Plan, and accomplishing the Annual Work Plan of the River Center. The Executive Director, along with the Board of Directors, serve as the face of the organization. The Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of the River Center and must have the knowledge and skills to communicate about the natural and cultural resources of the Dungeness River Watershed. The Executive Director works with the Center Board of Directors, partners, staff, volunteers, stakeholders, community leaders, park visitors, and the public.

What are the Essential Functions of the Executive Director?

Leadership and Supervision

  • Oversees staff, administration, operations, programs, facilities, and finances of the Dungeness River Nature Center.
  • Hires, supervises, evaluates the managers, and works with the managers to hire other staff.
  • Prepares and delivers annual performance evaluations and performance recognition for the employees that the Executive Director supervises, and reviews performance evaluations and performance recognition of the remaining staff.
  • Adheres to and ensures that staff follows the Tribe’s policies and procedures. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Development and Fundraising

  • Oversees the development and fundraising activities and events.
  • Cultivates and retains donors to build enduring relationships.
  • Informs donors, members, and the public about the Center’s operations and significant accomplishments.
  • Collaborates with staff to write and implement the annual fundraising and marketing plan.
  • Manages both written and online appeals.
  • Leads staff and volunteers through the grant process including identifying grant opportunities, writing grants, administering successful grants, and meeting reporting requirements.
  • Collaborates with staff on fundraising tasks, including letters, newsletters, and other materials.  
  • Makes fundraising appeals and/or direct asks to individuals and groups.

Fiscal Management

  • Formulates the Center’s annual budget with the Board, Treasurer, and Center staff.
  • Oversees the operating budget, both income and expenses, working with staff, contractors, and the Center’s Treasurer.
  • Ensures that staff consistently, accurately, and timely follow Center bookkeeping and recordkeeping policies and procedures.

Planning and Reporting

  • Works with the Center’s Board, staff, and partners to develop goals, plans, and metrics to evaluate achievements.
  • Supports the Mission, implements the Strategic Plan, and accomplishes the Annual Work Plan.
  • Collaborates with the Tribe on the planning and implementing the Tribal Outdoor Recreation Plan and other Railroad Bridge Park plans.
  • Meets assigned deadlines and administrative and reporting requirements.

Relationships

  • Establishes and maintains effective and productive working relationships with the Center’s partner organizations, Board of Directors, and members.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with community leaders, other organizations, and individuals.
  • Represents the Center and interacts with the Center’s visitors, park users, organizations, government agencies and officials, and the media.

Facilities

  • Oversees and coordinates the maintenance of facilities with the Tribe.
  • Works with staff to ensure facilities are operating effectively, including the Center building, Cedar Hat Classroom, and other facilities.

What are the Requirements for this position?

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years of successful leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Proven experience in budget development, management, and strategic planning.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including effective verbal and written communication, and ability to work collaboratively with staff, Boards of Directors, Tribal leadership and staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to inspire and motivate staff and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated fundraising and grant writing ability.
  • Committed to inspire understanding, respect, and stewardship of the natural and cultural world, specifically as manifested in the Dungeness River Watershed and the Olympic Peninsula.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Effective time management, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, team player, and the ability to work independently.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Suites and the ability to work with staff on other specialized platforms.
  • Ability to travel locally and on occasion, regionally as assigned.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to successfully pass background investigations.

Preferred Qualifications                                                                          

  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations governing the operation of nonprofit organizations.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native preferences apply.
