The Academic Program Coordinator will report to the Director of the Center for Coastal and Watershed Studies. The Coordinator will be primarily responsible for helping with logistical management of the travel-based Coastal Studies Semester (CSS) and the hands-on, laboratory and field experiences provided for students enrolled in the Sustainability Studies (SUS) major.

Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the effective planning and execution of the CSS field-based operations during the fall semester of odd-numbered years which include but are not limited to:

  • Planning all travel logistics (room, board, and transportation) for the CSS program which includes three week-long trips within Maryland and Virginia and several day-long trips within the Frederick area.
  • Travel with the students on all CSS off-campus trips and assist with programming such as labs and field trips, as well as day-to-day logistics and student life support.
  • Assist with planning of all travel-based courses (BIOL 345-349), such as Tropical Marine Ecology, which have one week to ten days of travel and fieldwork as a portion of the course.
  • Maintaining book-keeping records for all expenses associated with programming.
  • Preparation of laboratories for CCS and Sustainability courses.

Support the CCWS Director with administrative duties related to academic programs (CSS and SUS) which include but are not limited to:

  • Purchasing supplies (laboratory or class related).
  • Maintaining lab equipment and supply inventory.
  • Assist with proposal and report writing.
  • Maintain CCWS website and maintain the Center’s presence on social media.

Assist with recruiting students to enroll in academic programs offered by the CCWS

  • Plan and host information and recruitment meetings for CSS students (in-person or virtual).
  • Attend Hood recruitment events, such as Discover Hood days or Open Houses as requested.

Mange the Environmental Services activities of the Center. This includes:

  • Coordinating field sampling services, student assistant schedules and lab work.
  • Training and supervising student assistants in field and laboratory methods
  • Conducting analytical quality control / quality assurance protocols and data checks
  • Communicating with clients regarding scopes of work, data summaries, budget/invoicing and other contractual information

Other duties as needed and assigned.

Education and/or Experience

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications

A Master’s degree in environmental science (or a related field) or a bachelor’s degree and three years’ experience in programs at a college or other non-profit with a similar mission of hands-on experiential learning.

Preferred Skills and Characteristics

Knowledge/experience in aquatic science, environmental-social interactions, sustainable food systems, or alternate energy sources is preferred.

Technology Skills

Strong computer proficiency in internet applications and e-mail, including MS Office Suite Productivity products (such as Microsoft Word, Access, SharePoint, Excel & PowerPoint), Zoom, Canva and ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.

Familiarity with general principles and components of admission data systems and student information systems.

Language Skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate the value of participating in the CSS or the SUS major offered at Hood College.

Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from external and internal inquiries both in person and by phone or email. Ability to write or co-author proposals, routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, faculty, staff, and other constituencies.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with and apply basic mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually by using a calculator or a spreadsheet application. Ability to apply analysis of trends concepts. Ability to use mathematical concepts in developing reports, monitoring expenses, and managing a budget.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in a theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
