Trout Unlimited is a national organization with 300,000 members and supporters organized into over 400 chapters and councils nationwide. These dedicated grassroots volunteers are matched by a respected staff of organizers, lawyers, policy experts, and scientists, who work out of more than 45 offices across the country.  Our mission is to conserve, protect, and restore North America’s cold-water fisheries and their watersheds. 

Trout Unlimited’s Montana Water Program is seeking up to two summer legal interns. The intern(s) will work out of the Bozeman Trout Unlimited office, supervised by the Montana Water Director and staff attorneys. The intern will support activities that benefit trout conservation across western Montana. The position(s) has funding for up to 400 work hours beginning on or about June 1, 2024. Depending on the applicants’ needs, this can be a full- or part-time position. Time off as well as the start and end dates can be flexible. Wages are $18/hr for candidates new to Trout Unlimited.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Assist TU instream flow and legal staff with legal research and analysis, drafting, and trial preparation in ongoing water right litigation.

· Assess water rights for potential conservation applications and assist in drafting water leases and change applications.

· Assist TU and Gallatin Water Trust in creating a water rights exchange.

· Participate in monthly flow monitoring of TU instream flow leases.  

Requirements

Job Requirements:

· Current law student or recent graduate with interest in water rights and natural resources law

· Willingness and capability of lifting heavy gear, working in and around water, and hiking all day over rough terrain in inclement weather

· Ability and willingness to travel. Valid driver’s license and dependable vehicle required.

· Housing is not provided; the intern must make their own housing arrangements in Bozeman or the surrounding area

· Must possess a passion for coldwater conservation and ability to work as part of a team

Other Desirable Skills (not required):

· Interest in conserving coldwater fisheries

· Familiarity with Trout Unlimited and its mission

Experience with Westlaw, Lexus, or other legal research tools and Microsoft business suite 

Salary Description

$18.00 per hour
