Job Summary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (CIMAR), University of Hawai’i Sea Level Center (UHSLC), located in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.  

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $5,500 – $6,250/Mon.  

DUTIES:  Works in collaboration with the UHSLC Director and Associate Director to understand the mechanisms, predictability, and impacts of sea-level variability. Specific projects may include assessing state-of-the-art climate model analyses and forecasts; analyzing in-situ and satellite observations of sea levels, and weather or climate conditions; and performing statistical analysis and projections of water level extremes.  

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: 
EDUCATION: PhD from an accredited college or university in Physical Oceanography, Climate, Atmospheric or related physical sciences or in the Computing Sciences.
EXPERIENCE: Up to three (0-3) years of postdoctoral experience performing oceanographic or climate research involving data analysis or modeling, including experience working with large data sets in a research capacity, or computer science research involving data analysis or modeling using machine and deep learning methods.
KNOWLEDGE: Extensive programming knowledge in at least one scientific programming/scripting language (e.g., MATLAB, Python). Proficiency in the command-line environment of UNIX-based operating systems. Working knowledge of the application of mathematics and statistics for data analysis and modeling. Working knowledge of common data formats (NetCDF, CSV, XML, JSON, etc.) and methods of data exchange (FTP, OPeNDAP, Globus, etc.).
ABILITIES & SKILLS: Demonstrated skill in analyzing large datasets from observational or modeling products to diagnose oceanic or atmospheric variability processes is required, along with experience communicating scientific results via publications and presentations.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    
Possess keen interest in exploring new research topics, and applying results to develop useful products.   Familiarity with any of the following is preferred: coupled general circulation models (e.g., those used for making climate analyses and forecasts); satellite and tide gauge observations of sea levels; using AI to advance scientific research (e.g., applying neural networks to solve forecasting problems or large-language models to improve project workflows).
