Your role
The Agribusiness Food and Water department, team LAC & Forestry is looking for a Senior Investment Officer (SIO). The team comprises of 11 investment professionals (including this vacancy). The team is responsible for a portfolio of around 25 clients and EUR 500 million exposure and supported by a team of environmental, social, insurance, legal and compliance specialists.
The SIO will report to the Manager LAC & Forestry. This role involves:
- Business development: Drives the agribusiness origination activities in the LAC region, drafts key account plans and/or country strategies. Creates innovative business opportunities.
- Portfolio management: has overall responsibility for quality and timelines of all internal documents (e.g., reviews, change and waiver requests, disbursements, and IRC memos)
- Strong relationships management: build strong relationship with clients and prospects by understanding their business, the market and environment they operate in and the risks and challenges they face through regular visits and/or calls.
- Team collaboration: Active participation in defining the Forestry strategy/business plan together with the manager and colleague (S)IOs. Structures transactions in collaboration with Private Equity, Environmental Specialists and other specialists and teams e.g., Syndication and KYC, to offer the best solution to the client.
- Coaches Associates and Portfolio Analysts as need to.
- Shares explicit industry, regional and client insights.
- Takes the lead in negotiation/contracting process of debt transactions in collaboration with the legal team.

The LAC – Forestry team is part of the Agribusiness, Food & Water departments and focuses on origination, execution, and management of debt investments in the agribusiness sectors in Central and South America. The team works with companies that operate along the agribusiness value chain including primary production, processing, trading and logistics. The Agribusiness department consists of 52 investment professionals with diverse backgrounds who are located across our offices in The Hague, Johannesburg and Nairobi. This role is based in The Hague.
Your background
- Master’s degree in economics, finance, business administration or equivalent.
- 10+ years of relevant experience, including important business development experience in the agribusiness sector in emerging markets.
- Proven experience in structuring complex transactions and leading difficult deal negotiations.
- Deep understanding of and affinity with international environmental, social and human rights standards, including the ones that are particularly relevant to the agribusiness sector;
- A business track record in Latin America and affinity with the language and culture.
Personal Skills
- Excellent English communication both written and spoken.
- Business communication skills in Spanish (or Portuguese).
- Ability to source new business (also in new countries), to build a trustworthy relationship with clients and persuade and influence at transaction level and beyond.
- Ability to analyse financial and economic data, markets and how this drives the credit quality of the client.
- Structuring of the investment such that it serves the needs of the client and protects the position of FMO.
- Can effectively strike the balance between commercial goals and upholding FMO’s development mandate, E&S/human rights standards.
- Leads by example, displaying strong team skills, contributing to team success and to a constructive, positive, and collaborative work environment.
- Displays strong risk awareness, while thinking creatively with an entrepreneurial focus.
