The Department of Separation Science of the LUT School of Engineering Sciences is hiring a post-doctoral researcher and a junior researcher (doctoral student) for a new project funded by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation. The project is led by Professor Amit Bhatnagar, who is the head of the Water Treatment and Algal Biotechnology Research Group in LUT’s Mikkeli unit. The project will evaluate the effectiveness of advanced functional materials for PFAS removal in an aquatic environment using multiscale computational modelling.
The selected candidates will work on the synthesis and characterization of novel advanced functional materials and their subsequent applications for PFAS removal from water using multiscale computational modelling. Suitable candidates should demonstrate the ability and motivation to conduct laboratory experiments and field studies. Prior knowledge of computational modelling, materials synthesis, and PFAS removal techniques is desirable. The applicants must have strong communication skills and excellent English skills, both written and spoken. The selected candidates will communicate research findings by publishing scientific papers and giving presentations at conferences.
Post-doctoral researcher
We are in search of candidates who are exceptionally motivated and enthusiastic. Candidates for the post-doctoral researcher position should have a doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g., modeling and simulation in material science and engineering, material chemistry, chemical engineering, or other closely related fields) and proficiency in independent research. Their academic achievements should be significant, including first-author publications in the field of multiscale computational modelling, materials synthesis, or PFAS removal techniques.
According to LUT University regulations, a post-doctoral researcher is required to have the ability for independent scientific work and teaching skills needed in the performance of the duties.
We offer you meaningful work, a highly skilled working community and possibilities for a good work-life balance. We support our employees in maintaining and developing their professional skills. The first employment contract is fixed-term (1+3 years) for postdoctoral researcher, including a six-month trial period, and LUT University is committed to promoting the career of the hired person to the consequent level in the non-tenure track system if set evaluation criteria are fulfilled.
Junior researcher (doctoral student)
Applicants for the junior researcher position must have a university master’s degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g., modeling and simulation, material science or engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science and engineering, or other closely related fields). However, undergraduate students in the process of completing their master’s degree are encouraged to apply and complete their degree before work starts.
In addition, candidates must be able and motivated to complete the doctoral studies within the normative duration of the studies for the degree (i.e., four years). The employment relationship of the junior researcher (doctoral student) will start with a one-year term, which can be extended for another three years provided that the studies have progressed as planned in the project. The position includes a six-month trial period.
An employment contract can be concluded only if the candidate obtains the right to pursue postgraduate studies at LUT University.
Employment relationship and pay
The starting date is 2 May 2024 (negotiable), and the location is LUT’s Mikkeli unit.
The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The annual salary range of post-doctoral researchers is approximately 48 300–56 400 euros, depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. The typical gross annual starting salary for a junior researcher is approximately 31 900 euros.
In addition to a competitive salary, the wide range of benefits that come with these jobs include a holiday bonus, generous annual leave, a research incentive scheme with personal rewards for high-quality publications, flexible working hours, occupational health care, a collegial working environment, and continued commitment to your support, learning, training, and development.
