Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken
The work in the Food Security and Nutrition, Water and Climate department of the Embassy is guided by the Multi Annual Country Strategy (MACS). The Netherlands in Kenya has developed the next four year MACS that will cover the period 2023-2026(Multi Annual Country Strategy 2023-2026 |Netherlandsandyou.nl). The MACS defines the focus of the Netherlands – Kenya cooperation under the guiding vision âKenya and the Netherlands working together for sustainable solutionsâ. The referred to country strategy is build on three mutually reinforcing pillars, that is; 1) expanding and deepening the economic relationship, 2) strengthening stability and resilience, 3) reducing inequalities and leaving no one behind. The Embassyâs work is therefore outlined based on these pillars and strategic objectives as defined in the MACS document. The internship position will also contribute to the successful realization of the MACS ambition.
Under the MACS, the Embassy and IGG explored opportunities in the nexus of food security and water in regions in Kenya severely impacted by climate change and (therefore) more prone to instability, including food and water insecurity especially in the arid and semi arid lands (ASALs). Climate change in these areas will likely lead to compounded water stress, losses in crop productivity, further degradation of rangeland and a higher incidence of pests and diseases as well as insecurity linked to conflicts between pastoralist communities. The nexus approach is highlighted as being crucial for achieving greater climate resilience in Kenya, as a prerequisite for poverty reduction, mainly because it addresses multiple interdependencies between food, water, energy and climate that affect the overall sustainability of ecological systems, enhance economic opportunities and strengthen communitiesâ resilience.
In addition, under the MACS the nexus between development cooperation and humanitarian assistance is being explored. With particular attention on integrating efforts in the Arid, Semi-Arid Lands in Kenya with regards to Netherlands investments in food security, water and climate on the one hand, and humanitarian assistance, migration and stability (in particular, the prevention and countering of radicalization and violent extremism, P/CVE) on the other hand.
A stronger focus on ASALs (targeting fragile areas) and the nexus approaches, with climate resilience as a cross-cutting objective, requires cross-sectoral collaboration and coordination, a clear operationalization of the nexus approach, and the identification of opportunities within the nexus where effective climate change resilience and adaptation measures can be better integrated.
The intern will be working in the food security/water/climate team of the Embassy. He/she will support the team in assessing, strengthening, and operationalizing the ASAL agenda for food security, water and climate. The intern will specifically focus on strengthening the narrative to have water, food security, and climate in an integrated manner, to ensure sustained impact and sustainable transitions. This will provide a solid basis for the Embassy to further enhance an effective integrated portfolio under the MACS as well as for diplomacy and outreach efforts in these sectors. He or she will also work with the regional humanitarian advisor based in Nairobi, on aspects where there is also complementarity between humanitarian and the development work on water and food security and nutrition in the ASALs.
