Head of Hydraulic Engineering Infrastructure and Piping Systems
The department provides innovative future-proof solutions to societal challenges. We do this in the areas of sustainable, safe, energy-efficient and hydraulic infrastructure. Our field faces major challenges. Examples include locks and storm surge barriers that are aging, design criteria that are changing, the need to roll out and optimize the design of heating and cooling networks, and drinking and wastewater systems that are facing replacement challenges.
The specialist knowledge and experience of Hydraulic Engineering is key in solving these challenges. They are becoming more complex and the connection with other disciplines more relevant. You as department head have a major role in facilitate the design of new research and/or consultancy projects to make our knowledge base stronger.
What do you do as head of the department?
- You lead a diverse group of 30 professional with a broad project portfolio, working with and for many different clients and partners.
- You coach the colleagues in your department on organizational and career goals. You also support them with their personal development.
- Ambition of the department is to work more as a team. You initiate and facilitate working in teams.
- You develop and implement the department’s strategy. You are part of the management team of the unit. This team consist of fellow department heads and the unit manager. You are involved in the strategic direction and operational management of the unit.
- You stimulate internal cooperation with other units and departments of Deltares and you are constantly looking for external cooperation. With your knowledge and skills you facilitate the design of new research and/or consultancy projects.
The team develops top knowledge and products with complex software (including CFD), experimental facilities and innovative measurement techniques. At the interface of applied research, innovation and specialist advice, the department is close to practice and plays an important role in making new knowledge applicable to designers and managers of infrastructure. Our clients are governments, contractors and engineering firms (national and international).
The working environment within the department is characterized by its informal and professional character. Where initiatives are encouraged.
What does Deltares expect from you as head of the department?
- With a coaching style, you succeed in motivating people to translate knowledge into knowledge products with added social value;
- You have strong communication skills in Dutch and English. You are able to make interdisciplinary connections;
- You have a collaborative attitude and you are not afraid to take necessary decisions;
- You have experience with strategy development and its implementation.
- You are creative and can cooperate with different types of organizations such as international market parties, knowledge institutes and governments;
- You have an affinity with our field of expertise.
What we offer:
- Deltares offers a market conform salary. Salary will be based on your experience with a maximum of €8.191 gross per month based on 40 hours per week;
- Vacation allowance of 8%, 34 vacation days based on 40 hours per week, ABP pension, vitality budget, mobility budget and a compensation for healthcare expenses;

- Deltares offers a contract for 12 months with the intention of a contract for an indefinite period of time;
