About the DepartmentNorth Carolina Sea Grant is part of a national network that conducts research, extension, and outreach to address the needs of coastal communities and ecosystems. It is a multi-campus program of the University of North Carolina System. This program is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Sea Grant College Program. Its headquarters is located in Raleigh on the campus of North Carolina State University.
Essential Job DutiesThe incumbent will be responsible for various aspects of North Carolina Sea Grant’s funding opportunities, faculty and student research, and fellowships. The role encompasses identification of research priorities, engagement with higher education institutions, proposal facilitation, peer review coordination, financial/award grant processes, program evaluation, and communication efforts. 


This position will coordinate and support a number of student fellowship opportunities, including but not limited to: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Management-Digital Coast Fellowship, the National Sea Grant College Program-National Marine Fisheries Service Fellowship, the NC Sea Grant-Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership Fellowship, and the NC Sea Grant-NC Space Grant Fellowship, the NC Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Policy Fellowship, and the John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship. 

Work closely with NC Sea Grant-funded students. Develop and maintain productive engagement as appropriate in support of program growth. 
Create student cohort opportunities with current and past supported students to foster professional development and networking opportunities. 
Foster new fellowship/student professional training opportunities as appropriate. 
Contribute to fellowship and other proposal development activities including budgets. 
Oversee fellowship awards, track invoices, and work with fiscal officer to process closeouts.

Engagement with Advisory Board:Coordinate and oversee engagement with the NC Sea Grant Advisory Board.
Plan meetings, develop agendas, and recruit speakers.
Oversee work groups and distribute minutes.
Collaborate with the management team to recruit a diverse membership.
Engagement with Higher Education Institutions:Actively engage with public and private higher education institutions.
Conduct in-person and virtual meetings to promote NC Sea Grant programs.
Research Project Evaluation and Reporting:Oversee the collection and evaluation of research project final reports.
Prepare annual reports for NC State University and NOAA.
Develop materials for federal and state program reviews, including site visits.
Coordination with Communication and Extension Team:Connect researchers and research results with NC Sea Grant’s communication and extension team.
Ensure research results reach targeted end users, including communities and government decision-makers.
Event Planning and Execution:Serve as the primary coordinator for NC Sea Grant’s Coastal Conference and other symposiums and meetings.
Support student engagement and highlight program opportunities and accomplishments.

Training is available to bolster the skills of the candidate as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree plus three years’ work experience post-graduation; or master’s degree with one-year post-graduation work experience.
Other Required QualificationsExcellent communication (written/oral) skills.Highly organized.Possess the ability and willingness to engage people and communities of different backgrounds.Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.Meeting facilitation experience.Capable of effectively and efficiently managing simultaneous tasks related to program administration, collaboration, and project management.A critical thinker capable of making independent decisions while focusing on organization/University goals and ideals.
Preferred QualificationsExperience conducting scientific research.Understanding of the principles behind extension and the land-grant university mission.Experience working in a higher-education setting.Experience interacting with higher-education faculty and students across public, private, and community colleges.Experience engaging students and faculty at Minority Serving Institutions.Experience planning conferences and workshops.Understanding of the principles of program evaluation.Prior experience working in a federal-state partnership organization.Some grant management and proposal budget development experience.
