Postdoctoral Researcher in Geography and Environmental Sciences

Northumbria University

Newcastle upon Tyne, UK 🇬🇧

JOB DESCRIPTION

ABOUT THE ROLE

A two-year postdoctoral researcher (PDRA) position in subglacial modeling of the Antarctic Ice Sheet is available at Northumbria University. The position is a part of the EU funded project Ocean-Ice (Ocean-Cryosphere Exchanges in ANtarctica: Impacts on Climate and the Earth System). This is a two-year fixed-term position.

The successful candidate will use numerical and theoretical methods to model production of subglacial water fluxes under the Antarctic Ice Sheet and how those water masses are routed to the ocean. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who is interested in tackling key questions related to the dynamics of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and its future impacts on sea level rise. Ideally you will have a background in physics or mathematics and experience in ice-flow or hydrological modelling, although neither of those are essential requirements.

Together with Prof. Hilmar Gudmundsson you will be running and further developing numerical models of ice-flow and subglacial water production. You will be investigating the impact of model initialization and basal sliding parameterizations on modelled spatial patterns of basal melt. Additionally, to running existing models you will also be developing new ideas and approaches to those research questions, and you will have the scope to work as an independent researcher in a collaborative and supportive research environment.

We welcome applications from the UK and across the world. Visit our web pages for details about Relocation Assistance

ABOUT THE TEAM

You will be a part of a large and active research group at Northumbria University and joining our research peak of excellence: Future of Ice on Earth. Our research focuses on understanding drivers of ongoing changes in the cryosphere and how to improve our ability to assess future changes and global impacts of loss of ice on Earth. You will also be collaborating with other members of the EU Ocean-Ice project and participating in work-packages meetings and international conferences.

ABOUT YOU

Applicants should hold a degree in physics, mathematics or geosciences, and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in glaciology or hydrology or related areas of earth sciences. Experience in numerical modelling is of advantage.
