Job description

Catchment Planning Specialists within the West Midlands are crucial to us meeting Statutory and local priorities to improve the environment.
In this role you will:
• Work closely with diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, improving our understanding of the catchments, and building our strategy and evidenced based priorities.
• Maintain our Catchment Planning System (CPS); and helping us understand the data, including aspects of the Water Environment Regulations (WFD).
• Use CPS to access information on status, objectives, reasons for failure and actions for a specific water body.
• Provide data to internal or external stake holders tailored to their needs.
• Use our Monitoring Commission to prioritise local water quality and quantity monitoring needs.
• Provide evidence to inform the development of water company business plans.
• Support area implementation and refresh of the River Basin Management Plans, and Local Outcome Plan; working with the relevant business boards and Area Leadership Team members to guide future direction.
• Support key strategies such as Diffuse Water Pollution Plans (DWPP) and the Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS).
• Be an integral core member of the Catchment Based Groups (CBGs) to understand and support planned projects, ensuring the best outcome for the environment; whilst driving the narrative on priorities.
• Ensure we consider the Water Environment Regulations illustrated through performance indicators.
The team
The Integrated Environment Planning team are specialists in water resources, water quality, and data management. We work with other Area and National teams, and external stakeholders, shaping plans that drive West Midland’s Area priorities.
You will have an incident support role, and make yourself available to respond or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you.
Experience/skills required
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
o Interest in using environmental data and evidence to help plan and deliver multifunctional environmental benefits.
o An understanding of current environmental issues affecting the Area.
o Research/analysis skills and the ability to make proportionate, evidence-based decisions.
o Proven communication, influencing and networking skills, inspiring collaboration, and information sharing.
o Ability to coach/mentor others, improving resilience within the team.
o Ability to work under own initiative and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
o Experience in catchment/river basin planning, mapping software and the Water Framework Directive will be advantageous.
o Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in different situations.
o Innovative and interesting ways to highlight and visualise our data. It’s advantageous to have working knowledge of ArcGIS.
A degree level or higher in a relevant environmental discipline is desirable but not essential.
