Job Description
The Desert Research Institute (DRI) is accepting applications for an Assistant Research Professor in Mountain Hydrometeorology within the Division of Atmospheric Science (DAS). The incumbent will contribute to multiple funded projects that focus on the intersection of atmospheric and hydrologic science in mountain environments. Candidates should have a background in snow hydrology, atmospheric science, and field experience with environmental observations. We are particularly interested in candidates that have experience writing grants in collaboration with a range of stakeholder groups to address challenges in natural resource management.
The position will be based at DRI’s Reno campus. Travel will be a significant component of the project, and will include travel to field sites, collaborators’ offices, and conferences.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution.
- 2 years research experience relevant to the funded projects (including but not limited to snow hydrology, precipitation, and in situ observations of both snowpack and atmospheric conditions).
- Demonstrated contribution to original research published in peer reviewed journals.
- Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
- Experience writing funded proposals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with diverse stakeholders including local, state, and federal agencies.
- Experience with observational networks, including building and maintaining observational sensors and multi-sensor platforms.
- Experience with data quality assurance/quality control methods.
- Experience with data analysis and data visualization best practices.
Conditions of Employment
- Willingness and ability to travel for fieldwork.
- Valid driver’s license required (or ability to obtain one by date of hire);
- Must be able to travel and to work in harsh field conditions for extended periods of time (i.e., southwest deserts in the summer, cold regions, tropical regions), walk/hike across uneven terrain, and ability to lift heavy equipment (40+ lbs.)
Compensation and Benefits
The minimum annual starting salary is $89,204 and is competitive and commensurate with education, experience, and aligns with similar public academic research institutions. DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance; including 17.5% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 12 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the choice of two health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts. Additionally, there is no state income tax and no social security deduction.
