About the Project

The Environmental Process Engineering group at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) invites applications for a PhD position in the Sustainable Environment program for Fall 2024. This exciting project, in partnership with national utilities, focuses on developing innovative strategies to manage biofouling in membrane desalination processes.

Research Project:

The candidate will be actively involved in:

  1. Survey of Full-Scale SW UF-RO Fouled Modules: Conducting comprehensive surveys of fouled modules in seawater ultrafiltration-reverse osmosis (SW UF-RO) systems.
  2. Bench-Scale Fouling Analysis: Utilizing membrane fouling simulators with both real and synthetic seawater to analyze mechanical properties of membrane fouling layers at under controlled experimental conditions.

Advanced Analytical Techniques:

The research will employ sophisticated methods including:

  • Optical Coherence Tomography: To visualize and analyze biofouling layers.
  • 2D Confocal Raman Spectroscopy: For detailed chemical characterization of biofilms.
  • Plate Rheology: To understand the mechanical properties of biofouling layers.

Candidate Profile:

  • A strong academic background in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, or related fields.
  • A keen interest in membrane technology, water treatment processes, and analytical techniques.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with industry partners and research teams.
