Job description

Carl Tryggers Post-doctoral Scholarship:
The effect of vegetation shifts on the greenhouse gas balance of rewetted peatlands

Rewetting has been proposed as an effective nature-based method to regain carbon sinks in drained peatlands. However, peatland rewetting can also increase the emission of the greenhouse gases (GHG) methane and nitrous oxide to the atmosphere. After peatland rewetting, temporal shifts in vegetation occur from terrestrial plants, to wetland plants such as peat mosses and sedges. Currently, there is limited information on how such shifts in vegetation will affect the GHG balance of peatlands, making it difficult to assess the impact of peatland rewetting on climate. In this project we aim to link peatland plant communities to the GHG balance of peatlands to better understand how peatland rewetting will affect global warming depending on vegetation establishment. This two-year postdoctoral project is connected to a larger FORMAS-funded project that intensively follows plant community composition, hydrology and water quality in a chrono-sequence of rewetted peatland sites. The postdoctoral researcher will complement this data with measurements of GHG emissions in several study sites in order to estimate the feedback on climate of peatland rewetting.

The postdoctoral researcher will be based at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Uppsala University, Sweden. The main supervisor will be Charlotte Grasset (limnology program) and the co-supervisor Gustaf Granath (plant ecology program). The postdoc will participate in meetings and seminars from both programs, and take part in the activities of the large FORMAS-funded project.

Description of Scholarship. The Carl Tryggers foundation provides financial support directly to the successful applicant and is a tax-free scholarship for two years (https://www.carltryggersstiftelse.se/). The applicant will have access to many different facilities and support programs at the limnology program and Uppsala University for post-doctoral researchers. All expenses related to the field work (accommodation, transport, etc.) will be covered and additional benefits can be discussed.

Desirable Qualifications:
– Strong background in biochemistry and greenhouse gas fluxes/carbon cycling
– Strong programming skills in R or other platforms
– Background in ecosystem and plant ecology is meriting
