The Department of Natural Resources is hiring a Lake Superior Program Coordinator to work in the Water Resources Management Specialist Advanced classification within the Division of Environmental Management. This position will be located in Superior (Douglas County) or Ashland (Ashland County) depending on the selected candidate and department needs. There is an opportunity to telework for up to 60% of the workweek dependent on work needs.

Position Summary

This position serves as the Lake Superior Program Coordinator for the Wisconsin portion of the Lake Superior Basin. The position is responsible for the development, promotion, and implementation of the Lake Superior Program elements to address water quality, reduce toxicant effects on fish and wildlife, protect and restore habitat and the ecological integrity and resilience of the Lake Superior Basin.  This position will participate with other partners involved with Lake Superior management issues including federal, tribal, state, academic, regional partnerships, and non-government organizations. The position will represent Wisconsin DNR (WDNR) on the Lake Superior Partnership Work Group and associated Committees to provide input to the development of Lakewide Action and Management Plan (LAMP) updates. The position will coordinate and develop strategies to implement the Lake Superior LAMP in Wisconsin. The position will foster coordination between St. Louis River Area of Concern (AOC) delisting efforts, WI Lake Superior Action Plan(s) and LAMP implementation. The position will promote pollution prevention and abatement efforts in Lake Superior. Working with partners, the position will develop and oversee protection, restoration and resilience projects including coastal wetland, watershed, and tributary health initiatives in the Lake Superior Basin. Salary Information

Lake Superior Program Coordinator (Advanced-Level Water Resources Management Specialist) starting pay is $34.00 – $41.00/ hour ($70,720.00- $ 85,280.00 annually). The classification title is Water Resources Management Specialist Advanced and is in pay schedule/ range 15-03.

A 12-month probation period may be required. Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

Job Details

This position covers the entire Lake Superior Basin under the jurisdiction of the State of Wisconsin. The incumbent is required to travel regularly throughout the Northern Region, as well as periodic travel across Wisconsin and the Great Lakes Region (US and Canada) to represent Wisconsin regarding Lake Superior issues. There will be times when the incumbent may participate in field activities including water monitoring and habitat management. This could involve driving automobiles or trucks, walking to remote sites, using handheld instruments, lifting, and carrying equipment, and/or wading in streams or lakes.

The selected candidate must be able to drive a state vehicle. Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUI violation within the past year are barred from driving state vehicles.

This position will require employees to possess a Boating Safety Education Certificate (often referred to as “Wisconsin boating License” or “Wisconsin Boater Education Card”) as proof that you have successfully completed all state-mandated boater education requirements within first 3 months of the job.

Required qualifications for these positions include all of the following:

  • Assisting in planning, project development and implementation of watershed or large-scale environment-related projects (e.g. multiple work units, business entities, jurisdictions, etc.)
  • Collaborating across organizations or groups from a wide variety of backgrounds to accomplish a goal. (e.g. federal, tribal, state and/or local governments; academia; non-profit organizations, etc.)
  • Assisting in planning, project development and implementation of watershed or large-scale environment-related projects (e.g. multiple work units, business entities, jurisdictions, etc.)

In addition to the required qualifications, best-qualified applicants will also have a combination the following:

  • Experience and/or formal education with management and issues in water resources, especially for the Great Lakes.
  • Experience leading the development and implementation of a watershed or basin environmental resource management plan
  • Experience leading project development and implementation of large-scale environment-related projects (e.g. multiple work units, business entities, jurisdictions, etc.)
