Request for expressions of interest for technical support to WHO's work on drinking-water quality and safety

WHO is seeking expressions of interest from institutions, companies or individual consultants for technical support to WHO’s work on drinking-water safety and quality. The selected contractors will work under the supervision of the focal point for WHO’s work on drinking-water quality and safety, in the WHO Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Health (WSH) unit.

WHO welcomes expressions of interest for the technical roles as outlined in the two different terms of references (ToRs). Applicants should submit a separate cover letter and CV for each role/TOR of interest. Deadline for applications: 5 January 2024

I. Background on WHO’s Guidelines for drinking-water quality

The WHO Guidelines for drinking-water quality (GDWQ) provides the international reference point for the development of drinking-water quality regulations world-wide.   The GDWQ are updated through a rolling revision process in response to new evidence, uncertainty about best practice, and requests from stakeholders.  The GDWQ are supported by a number of technical resources that provide the evidence base supporting the recommendations in the GDWQ or provide detailed guidance to support effective implementation of WHO recommendations. 

II. Terms of reference (ToRs)

The following ToRs are included in the request for expressions of interest:

  1. Expert technical inputs and support to regional and country efforts to implement WHO’s Guidelines for drinking-water quality
  2. Expert technical inputs for WHO initiative to evaluate pesticide metabolites

Details for each ToR including the main outputs/activities and specific qualifications and experience requirements are included in each individual ToR.

III. Application details

Applications should be submitted by midnight GMT on 5 January 2024 to gdwq@who.int and include:

  • Up-to-date curriculum vitae or company description
  • Brief summary statement outlining:
    • Specific areas of interests
    • Skills, experience and contributions that you bring to the specific ToR
    • Expected availability during 2024/2025
    • Daily or monthly rates.

Application review criteria includes:

  1. The required qualifications, experience, technical skills and knowledge and language skills as outlined in the specific ToR;
  2. Availability for specific tasks in consideration of needs during 2024 and beyond; and
  3. Cost effectiveness.  

Successful applicants will be contacted by email by 9 January 2024 to take part in virtual interviews on 11 and 12 January 2024.

Please inform in your cover letter of any limitations to your availability on these dates.

Please also note that applications for this request for expressions of interest will be used to develop a pool of consultants for both long and shorter-term contracts.
