Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
The Department of Systems Analysis Integrated Assessment and Modelling (Siam) is looking for a
PhD student in Machine Learning for Sustainable Wastewater Treatment
We are looking for candidates with a strong quantitative background such as applied mathematics, environmental engineering or physics, who are skilled in programming, and driven to contribute to solving environmental challenges.
We are a diverse team, including process engineers, a theoretical physicist, an applied statistician and another PhD student, all working collaboratively to address the complexities of wastewater treatment.
Wastewater treatment plants play a crucial role in protecting both human health and the environment. We are currently facing challenges in optimizing these facilities, especially in predicting and reducing emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), a very powerful greenhouse gas and ozone depleting substance, which can be formed in the process of biological nitrogen removal. We are looking for someone to help us develop practical solutions.
As a PhD student in our team, you will:
- Develop and apply new approaches such as Machine Learning and stochastic modelling for biological wastewater treatment
- Address gaps in current research related to interpretability and reliability of models
- Collaborate on innovative approaches, including the use of genomics data
Requirements:
- Solid background in applied mathematics, mathematical modeling or machine learning
- Good programming skills
- Genuine interest in contributing to environmental solutions
Benefits:
- You will be working within an interdisciplinary team at Eawag near Zurich
- Competitive salary commensurate with Swiss standards. Funding is ensured for 4 years
- Upon successful completion of your thesis, you will be awarded the PhD degree of ETH Zurich
