Job description

Do you want to help London and the Thames Estuary adapt to climate change? In this role you’ll be using the latest climate science and innovative approaches to flood risk management to provide solutions at the forefront of an adaptive pathways plan for the largest flood risk strategy in the country.

The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities and our environment.

We are looking for someone to provide technical leadership within the team as part of delivering of the Thames Estuary 2100 Plan. The role can be adapted to suit certain skill sets and would suit those with hydrology/analytical/engineering skills. Depending on the experience of the candidate, key duties across this role could involve:

  • Supporting ongoing projects using the latest science and data analysis – with a focus on hydrological modelling. You will use existing data and oversee new modelling projects to improve our understanding of flood risk in the Thames Estuary, particularly where tidal and fluvial risk interfaces.
  • Applying engineering skills and judgement to advance our understanding of how major flood risk management infrastructure can be implemented across the Thames Estuary, acting as an intelligent client to our delivery programmes.
  • Translating data and using evidence to inform the review of flood risk management practices and environmental objectives. As an adaptation pathways strategy, we are constantly refining requirements and delivery efficiencies using the best available information.
  • Working closely with project teams, suppliers and external partners such as councils, demonstrating strong technical leadership. You will also collaborate with our construction delivery partners as part of a £12bn investment in flood defence works up to 2050.

The team

As part of Flood and Coastal Risk Management in the London Area, we play an essential role in enhancing and sustaining London. You will be part of our growing dedicated Thames Estuary team, made up of dynamic and passionate experts in climate adaptation, planning, flood risk, engineering and programme management.

We are based in Westminster and there will be an expectation to work from the office roughly twice a week, though this can be flexible.

Experience/skills required

  • Experience working with or commissioning hydrological models for flood risk management, and wider knowledge of river processes, hydrology and flood risk
  • Understanding of engineering principles, judgement and awareness in relation to major infrastructure projects. Engineering experience with flood defences and carbon management would be beneficial but not essential.
  • Translating organisational strategy and contemporary science into pragmatic and effective delivery.
  • Delivering work within a programme and project management framework to time, cost and quality.
  • Embracing and adapting to new ways of working to improve efficiency & productivity, having contributed constructively to any preceding discussion.
  • Using effective written and spoken communication skills to articulate complex scientific matters to influence and persuade, as well as working with customers and partners.
  • Capability to analyse and interpret figures and data, and have experience of using data and information to provide recommendations and/or inform a decision or outcome.

Contact and additional information

This role will be based in London and attracts London Weighting Allowance of £3889.

Interviews will be held in person/MS Teams week commencing 18th December. Flexibility on interview date due to leave plans around Christmas period and reasonable adjustments are allowed upon request.
