This is a great opportunity for experienced field hydrologists to build their career in a senior role, providing direction for hydrological monitoring programmes and mentorship to developing staff.
Our Auckland Council Research and Evaluation (RIMU) hydrology team is looking for a team member with experience, skills and knowledge in environmental monitoring and maintaining a hydrological network and associated equipment.
Based in Auckland CBD, but working across the Auckland region, you will help deliver RIMU’s core hydrological monitoring programmes. The role has a strong field component and will involve monitoring of rainfall, river flows, groundwater levels and other environmental parameters and processing data to organisational and national standards.
Your field work will include:
- installing monitoring equipment and low-voltage electrical work
- entering streams to gauge flows
- surveying
- maintaining sites for quality data collection
- managing operational logistics
- processing hydrological data according to National Environmental Monitoring Standards
The role includes on-call responsibilities and the potential to assist Auckland Emergency Management/Civil Defence with information logistics during extreme events. You will also be involved in other RIMU programmes like marine ecology and water quality.
He kōrero mōu: About you
With a degree or equivalent qualification in environmental science, environmental engineering or a New Zealand Diploma in Field Hydrology, you have passion for the outdoors and have an excellent health and safety attitude.
You have experience working in the field to collect environmental data, including using a range of equipment in data collection and managing logistics with team members. You have the skills and knowledge to assist managers, scientists, and other specialists to review monitoring networks and programmes and deliver robust datasets.
A natural problem-solver, you can come up with innovative solutions to technical challenges in the field and work towards continued improvement of installations and work procedures.
You are comfortable working in remote areas, have practical skills and like to work with your hands. We will also value your good written and verbal communication skills.
The following are also desirable:
• report writing experience
• knowledge of using time series data management
• training and certifications for manual handling, power tool use and electrical installations
• experience with policy effectiveness monitoring and evaluation
• an understanding of New Zealand’s regulatory framework and local government processes
