We are seeking a new colleague to join us as a research assistant for Water Technology and Processes section. Are you interested in boosting your experience and adding your input in water treatment methods? Then you may be our future colleague.
Your main task will include
Responsible for the experimental research on industrial and domestic water remediation technologies, which includes designing, set-up and maintenance of lab-scale reactors.
You must be able to work well both independently and proactively in collaboration with other supervisors, our industry partners, whilst developing several projects in parallel. It is important that you are good communicator, who masters English in both speech and writing academically.
Responsibilities
- Design, set up and maintain lab-scale and pilot-scale Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR), Fixed Bed Biofilm Reactors (FBBR) and activated sludge systems for organic carbon and nutrient removal.
- Nitrification inhibition analysis for the characterization of industrial wastewater.
- Ozonation of water and leachate.
- Perform Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of saline and non-saline water.
- Operate and maintain membrane bioreactors.
- Prepare technical reports to communicate results with relevant industrial partners.
- Instruct and guide bachelor and master students.
- Assist in teaching and supervising laboratory courses.
- Estimate parameters of secondary sedimentation gravity models and linking their variability with microbial diversity and other environmental parameters at full scale WWTPs
- Dissemination of the results in relevant national and international conferences
Qualifications
- Prior laboratory research experience and solid experimental skills
- Experience and academic knowledge on biological and physic-chemical processes in wastewater including activated sludge processes, advanced primary treatment, secondary treatment and anaerobic digestion.
- Good knowledge of softwares for statistical analysis, including GraphPad – Prism or SigmaPlot.
The candidate should also:
- Enjoy transferring the know-how to others.
- Has a team-oriented spirit and thrives on the collaboration in an international environment.
- Be organized, able to develop several projects in parallel, and be proactive.
As a formal qualification, you must have a master’s degree in engineering or equivalent.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The Water Technology and Processes Section is one of the seven sections comprising the Department: Circularity and Environmental Impact, Climate and Monitoring, Geotechnics and Geology, Indoor Environment, Materials and Durability, Quantitative Sustainability Assessment, Water Technology & Processes. Water Technology and Processes focuses on sustainable treatment of water for domestic, industrial and agricultural purposes. Resource recovery from water is also considered. Research is conducted at laboratory, pilot and full scale using both computational and experimental approaches.
