This is a career-track post-doctoral research position at the Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO) at the University of Oklahoma in collaboration with NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory.

Overview

The incumbent will perform applied research with stakeholders in the NWS and USGS. The ideal candidate is someone who wants to be part of a highly collaborative team, enjoys working in the field of remote-sensor development, is interested in developing decision-support tools for natural hazards’ impacts on operations, is excited about publishing research in peer-reviewed journals, and who enjoys computer programming. This position is based at the National Weather Center in Norman, OK (bit.ly/oklanwc).

The Stormscale Hydrologic Modeling Team is a small, but highly energetic group of MS- and PhD-level researchers who work cooperatively with partners in operations to develop decision-support tools for hydrometeorological hazards, road transportation, and novel sensor development. The incumbent will have the opportunity to contribute to existing projects as well as engage in relevant novel ideas of their own. Previous exposure to hazards-related research is not required. About to defend or recent graduates are welcome to apply.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Participate in the development, laboratory testing, and field deployment of new remote sensing instruments for hydrometeorological natural hazards.
  2. Lead applied research of observations, models, and tools as they apply to the forecasting of rainfall-driven natural hazards such as flash floods and debris flows, including their impacts on property, society, and transportation.
  3. Engage the broader research community through public dissemination of research via conferences, workshops, and peer-reviewed journal articles.
  4. Write proposals and seek external funding in support of research

Qualifications

  1. A Ph.D. in engineering (or related discipline)
  2. Electrical engineering experience as applied to the development and application of remote sensors
  3. Computer programming experience
