Job Title: Campaign Manager – Clean Water Defense Campaign

Position Summary: Waterkeeper Alliance seeks a Campaign Manager to lead a high impact campaign to defend and enforce clean water laws, standards and permits, and fights against the ever-growing threats to clean and safe water. The Clean Water Defense campaign is leading the global fight for strong regulations and vigilant enforcement of environmental laws.
The Campaign Manager is a member of the organization’s Advocacy department and will be primarily responsible for managing Waterkeeper Alliance’s Clean Water Defense (CWD) campaign and staff. The Campaign Manager will work with other staff, Waterkeeper groups, community leaders, public officials, coalitions, and volunteers to build the public support needed to address the failure to regulate pollution that is devastating rivers, lakes, and estuaries and lowering the quality of life in our communities. This position reports to the Advocacy Director.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Execute a global advocacy campaign to tackle sources of water pollution;
- Coordinate with Waterkeeper groups, partners, and other stakeholders to support the campaign;
- Implement grassroots advocacy strategies for the campaign and mobilize community advocates in key prioritized areas;
- Aggressively oppose the weakening or elimination of environmental statutes, regulations, enforcement, and funding around the world;
- Strengthen public policy and private support for clean water;
- Support clean and free-flowing rivers and waterways;
- Restore and remediate distressed areas to provide justice, equality, and better health outcomes to correct decades of environmental damage inflicted upon the health and well-being of low-income communities, communities of color, and Indigenous communities;
- Educate decision-makers and the general public about water quality and quantity issues, including the occasional lobbying of public officials and government agencies;
- Interpret complex scientific and policy information for consumption by target audiences;
- Engage in community outreach, public speaking;
- Perform other campaign projects and administrative duties;
- Leverage Waterkeeper Alliance’s staff and expertise to support the implementation of a cohesive, integrated campaign;
- Export lessons learned to Waterkeeper groups across the globe facing similar threats;
- Increase the number of Waterkeeper groups participating in the campaign;
- Craft campaign e-mails, action alerts, website content, blogs, social media posts, letters to the editor and other opinion pieces, and videos; and
- Support the organization’s campaign fundraising goals.
- Execute additional projects, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: The position requires a broad skill set and the successful candidate must be driven by a strong desire for justice. The CWD Campaign Manager must have:
- A firm belief that everyone has a right to clean water for drinking, fishing, and swimming;
- Five or more years of relevant experience including a sound understanding of grassroots advocacy, environmental and administrative law, governmental policymaking, advocacy, and communications;
- Demonstrated familiarity with and commitment to working with, and being guided by, impacted communities and incorporating principles of equity, inclusion, and justice into campaign processes, objectives, and outcomes;
- Significant experience in the planning and implementation of advocacy campaigns and strategic initiatives. Experience should include at least some of the following activities: planning, strategy development and implementation, project management, organizing, lobbying, policy drafting or review, media relations, and working with community, political, and business leaders;
- Knowledge, experience and background with water quality issues;
- A demonstrated ability to interact effectively with lawmakers, other elected officials, and agency staff;
- Familiarity with, or the ability to readily adapt to, the Waterkeeper culture and model;
- Excellent written and oral presentation skills;
- The ability to work well independently; and
- A charismatic and likable personality and a good sense of humor.

Hiring Salary Range: $73,000-85,000 annually. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. Internal equity will be reviewed and considered to determine a final offer.
