Wetlands International South Asia seeks applications for the position of Technical Officer– Hindu-Kush Himalayan Wetlands.

The organization is establishing a regional office for Hindu-Kush Himalayan Wetlands with the ambition of: a) providing the necessary science and knowledgebase for the conservation and sustainable management of Himalayan wetlands (with a specific focus on High-Altitude Wetlands), b) capacity development of wetlands managers and stakeholders on the management needs of Himalayan high altitude wetlands, c) building sector partnerships for conservation of Himalayan wetlands in sector plans and programs, d) catalysing investments for conservation, restoration and integrated management of Himalayan high altitude wetlands, and e) fostering a CEPA programme to promote stakeholder participation in wetlands conservation and wise use. This office will also focus on enhancing the visibility of Wetlands International South Asia’s work in the Himalayan region, and help establish a work programme, working in partnership with state governments and agencies, civil society organizations and research and academic organizations, forthe conservation of wetlands in this region, with a special focus on high-altitude wetlands.    

Wetlands International South Asia office seeks a Technical Officer – Hindu Kush Himalayan Wetlands to lead the Hindu-Kush Himalayan regional office and support the implementation of projects and initiatives related to Himalayan wetlands.

The incumbent will be based in Dehradun, Uttarakhand (or any area suited for work in Himalayan Wetlands, especially high-altitude wetlands). Frequenttravel in the Hindu-Kush Himalayan Region will be needed for the delivery of the work programme. The incumbent will report to the Director. The appointment will initially be for two years with a possibility of extension based on performance review.

Job Purpose

The incumbent is intended to develop and manage the implementation of projects in the Hindu-Kush Himalayan region of India, develop relevant and innovative knowledge products and tools, and advocate for wetland solutions towards key stakeholders. Work shall also include maintaining the regional office and developing concept notes and support STO in project proposals to generate finances for running the Himalayan wetlands programme. Key responsibilities include maintaining an overview of the Hindu-Kush Himalayan landscape, liaising with stakeholders, conducting capacity development and outreach programmes, and supporting resource development. Good knowledge of the Himalayan landscape and its wetlands is essential.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Project cycle management and knowledge development which includes technical and financial implementation and reporting of projects in the Hindu-Kush Himalayan region
  • Run collaborative processes with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop knowledge products and tools to strengthen the strategic communication of outcomes of projects and other initiatives
  • Pro-actively and timely communicate with the donor including sharing successes and lessons
  • Represent Wetlands International South Asia in relevant meetings, workshops, training and forums
  • Support policy and advocacy on issues related to wetlands, biodiversity conservation and climate change
  • Prepare scientific and technical reports when required
  • Any other as may be assigned by the Director in discussion with the incumbent

Qualifications and Experience

Essential qualifications

  • M. Tech or M.Sc in wetland ecology, limnology, wetlands management, hydrology, environmental sciences, water resource management/planning or related disciplines
  • 3-5 years of overall experience in conservation and management of wetlands.
  • At least one years’ experience in implementing Himalayan based projects of strategic importance and coordinating the work of partners while meeting deadlines.

Desirable qualifications

Understanding of existing programming, regulatory and policy environment for Himalayan wetlands

Ability to communicate clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages including the ability to translate complex issues into concise and clear messages.

Remuneration

The incumbent will be placed in Grade 4 of the salary scale, with an annual gross remuneration of Rs. 8.5 lakhs with all perks.
