WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Postdoctoral Human Dimensions Scientist (PDHDS) will work for The Nature Conservancy (TNC) as part of the Global Science Team (GST). They will provide technical and scientific support for TNC’s One Conservancy Science Plan, which is investing in science across the organization to achieve TNC’s 2030 Goals for people and nature. This position will be focused on the design and execution of a research initiative to identify strategic priority-setting for human dimensions research that can accelerate conservation impact while ensuring equitable outcomes for both people and nature.

This is a two-year term limited position, with the possibility of a one- to two-year extension based on performance, deliverables, and funding opportunities. The location for this position is flexible to all locations where The Nature Conservancy is registered to do business. The successful candidate will have authorization to work within the country they are located.

The PDHDS will sit on the Human Dimensions Science Team (one of 5 science lines on the GST), and report to the Director of Human Dimensions Science. The project seeks to identify the biggest priority issues (globally and regionally) where novel uses of existing science and social science data and expertise can accelerate conservation practices that intersect in synergistic, or win-win ways, with sustainable development goals in partner communities and writ large. Central to the project will be the development and analysis of a comprehensive and multi-round survey and/or other research tools to identify areas of consensus within a large sample of TNC conservation practitioners. Their work will identify a set of priority areas and other insights that will play a critical role in strategic planning and the development of future programs and activities led by the Human Dimensions Team. The PDHDS will also explore the potential to expand the scope of the research outside of TNC and will collaborate with other GST staff in translating the results of this research into action, for example in strategy documents and project proposals.

They should have interests in the intersection of conservation, climate change and/or biodiversity loss, and human activities, and ideally experience considering these issues from the perspective of sustainable development and global and regional governance. Required technical experience includes qualitative research methods such as interviews, survey design and analysis, and policy analysis, and experience with such platforms as nVivo, Qualtrics. Some science steering experience, for example on proposal reviews or technical committees considering science prioritization agendas, is a plus. They should also have experience working collaboratively, including with those possessing diverse cultural experiences, and will be keen to contribute to TNC’s effectiveness as a science-based organization and to accelerate our progress towards our 2030 goals.
