Our Profile

The Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management at RWTH Aachen University is actively involved in many national and international research projects – often with research partners from other disciplines. Our research focuses on groundwater, floods/drought, constructive and nature-based hydraulic engineering, coastal and estuarine research, water morphology and sediment transport as well as hydropower. In addition to these topics, we are always working on exciting new research projects that arise from current issues. Our institute’s own experimental hall with over 2,000 square metres of space offers optimal possibilities for developing and operating models for projects on a large scale.

We are looking for an employee to work on a research project in the field of extreme marine events and natural hazards starting 01.01.2024.

Your Profile

You have completed your university studies (Master’s degree or comparable) in civil engineering, industrial engineering or environmental engineering with a specialisation in hydraulic engineering or environment with above-average success. In addition, you bring enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge in the field of hydraulic engineering/water management or other water-related topics. The following skills and characteristics also describe you:

  • Very good communication skills and a creative mind
  • Confident knowledge of the German and English language
  • Structured way of working with a focus on the essentials
  • Willingness to work in a team and to take on responsibility
  • Willingness to do business trips (national and international)
  • Aspiration to do a doctorate as preparation for the next career step

Your Duties and Responsibilities

You will be working in an interdisciplinary project, investigating the vulnerability of the central and eastern Mediterranean region to geomarine natural hazards. The project aims to develop specific protective measures against extreme marine events based on the data and knowledge obtained. Your tasks within the national research project include:

  • Literature research on tsunamis
  • Performing three-dimensional hydronumerical simulations for wave modelling
  • Interdisciplinary cooperation in a research team
  • Scientific evaluation and processing of research results
  • Preparation of a dissertation

What We Offer

The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled by 1/1/2024 and offered for a fixed term of 1 year.
An extension for at least 2 years is planned.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a full-time position.
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.
