This is an exciting decade to be a part of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) as we galvanize momentum to address the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change. This urgency is particularly pronounced when it comes to coastal fisheries, marine biodiversity, and the livelihoods of coastal communities.
The Global Fisheries Specialist supports the development and implementation of the Global Coastal Fisheries/FishPath strategy at TNC. They may take the lead on development and implementation of one or more components of the strategy. The Global Fisheries Specialist supports global strategy leadership by assisting with and/or managing priority projects and serves as a technical resource on the relevant global strategy and/or project(s). They work with other TNC staff, notably field colleagues, as well as external actors as applicable, to drive the implementation of the global strategy and associated projects in the places where TNC works. They track and/or assess fishing practices, governmental and global policies and decisions, or the practices or views of other stakeholders concerning the strategy or priority project and their potential impact on organizational conservation goals. They may advise and support TNC communications, marketing and philanthropy staff on issues related to the global strategy or priority project(s) and related issues. May involve domestic and international travel of 25% or more.
The location for this position is at TNC Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. The position sits within the Global Provide Food and Water team and reports to the FishPath Sr. Fisheries Scientist leading the work for the strategy in the Africa region.

Our team consists of a dedicated group who are leading the conservation effort on multiple fronts and who expertly bring strategy and action together.
The Global Fisheries Specialist within the Global Provide Food and Water team provides technical and scientific support for the Conservancy’s FishPath strategy and drives implementation of the overall strategy business plan across the organization to achieve planned conservation outcomes. The position applies technical knowledge of fisheries-related scientific principles, such as harvest strategy design, to a broad variety of assignments, including data and policy analysis, and coordinating aspects of project implementation. They support FishPath engagements, engage with government fisheries officials and coastal community members (e.g., fishers), writes reports and coordinates activities with field business unit staff. They will contribute to proposals and communication materials both within the Provide team as well as with field programs that focus on the implementation of technical aspects of FishPath engagements. They may help oversee contractors that conduct data collection and analyses, develop management plans or models for fisheries management. They support partnership development with academic leaders and institutions, government fisheries agency and other groups that do gender and financial literacy related work with fishing communities, specifically as it relates to the FishPath approach. The ideal candidate should have exceptional communication and project management skills and experience working with fishers in the field.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, fisheries science, environmental policy, political science, public policy, international relations, international development or related field and 4 years related experience, or equivalent combination.
- Experience leading matrix-style projects where different teams work collaboratively.
- Experience researching, critically analyzing, and evaluating information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive reports and recommendations for strategy and action.
- Experience writing and editing promotional and informational material.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Critical analytical thinking and excellent English writing skills are essential.
- Familiarity and knowledge related to environmental, and fisheries policy welcomed.
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary context and experience working with fishing communities with stakeholder processes highly desirable.
- Possesses strong interpersonal skills and political savvy. Must be a team player.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet time-sensitive deadlines.
- Ability to write and speak in a language other than English, such as Spanish or French desirable.
- Strong technical data analytical skills, interpretation, and presentation of information to a broad range of audiences and stakeholders.
- Experience in analyzing data and using statistical packages such as R-Programing, Excel, and other analysis tools.
- Familiarity with the FishPath Tool and process is a plus (www.fishpath.org).

SALARY INFORMATION
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $81,800 – $139,400 for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate’s location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
