About This Opportunity
The Reef Catchments Science Partnership (RCSP) is a collaboration between the University of Queensland and the Queensland Department of Environment and Science. The Partnership focusses on conducting research that will provide scientifically robust and defensible science tools, systems and frameworks to enhance the Queensland Government’s environmental compliance, monitoring and evaluation capabilities associated with the Reef Protection Regulations and the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan.

Key responsibilities at HEW 5 will include:
- Assist in research activities, following scientific methodology,
- Apply technical skills and knowledge to research tasks,
- Resolve issues with scientific and technical equipment,
- Maintain accurate records of experiments and outcomes,
- Assist with routine team administration,
- Aid in preparing reports, graphs, and presentations on research outcomes, and
- Have a current Australian C class Driver’s Licence which is requirement of the position to assist in regional travel and monitoring requirements, .
In addition to the above, Key Responsibilities at Hew 6 will also include:
- Contribute to a proactive safety culture and build positive relationships with stakeholders,
- Identify and address training needs, develop training resources, and provide support,
- Create and refine state-wide waterway event monitoring procedures and resources,
- Provide scientific and technical support for waterway monitoring networks, including data management, analysis, and quality assurance, and
- Ensure high occupational health and safety standards, including incident reporting and investigation.
There are up to three fixed term positions available through to 30th June 2026 across HEW 5 or HEW 6.
At HEW level 5, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $74,378.89 – $82,842.92, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $87,023.30 – $96,926.22 annually.
At HEW level 6, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $84,871.95 – $91,158.90, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $99,300.18
As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.
About You
For Appointment at HEW 5
- Completion of, or working towards completion of, Bachelor of Science or Environmental Science or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training,
- Excellent practical research skills and experience in water quality and environmental monitoring and evaluation,
- Experience using water quality monitoring equipment or a willingness to acquire such capabilities,
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues or independently on routine tasks,
- Experience in the use of R code and/or Python code for manipulating and statistically analysing water quality monitoring data or a willingness to acquire such capabilities, and
- Strong interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills with proven ability to produce clear, succinct documentation.
For Appointment at HEW 6
- Completion of Bachelor of Science or a relevant degree in Science with subsequent experience in coordinating activities or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training,
- Demonstrated research-relevant knowledge and skills with expertise in a wide range of specialist and general research techniques, including water quality and environmental monitoring and evaluation,
- Technical capabilities in maintaining and repairing water quality monitoring equipment or a willingness to acquire such capabilities,
- Expertise in the application of quality assurance and quality control systems and procedures pertaining to scientific research and water quality monitoring,
- Well-developed problem-solving skills, with an ability to forward plan, prioritise tasks to meet deadlines and work with a high level of adaptability, both independently and as part of a team,
- Expertise or ability to acquire expertise in the application of R code and/or Python code to water quality monitoring data,
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to produce clear, succinct documentation, and
- The ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of stakeholders in a research environment.
In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply:
