Job description

As the freshwater agenda continues to grow within Natural England, we are looking to recruit a Senior Adviser to provide leadership to guide our delivery across West Anglia (Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northants, Essex and Hertfordshire).

The role will be focused around coordinating and leading delivery for a range of freshwater ambitions. The postholder will input into our team planning and reporting, and engage with internal and external partners to ensure that the freshwater agenda is at the forefront of Nature Recovery across our 5 counties.

You will support colleagues across the West Anglia team to deliver their work, providing technical leadership and building strong and supportive networks with colleagues both in and outside the team. You will work closely with a range of external partners and stakeholders, providing strategic engagement and relationship management to the Environment Agency, Local Authorities, landowners and the Water Companies.

Key Tasks:

  • Work collaboratively with local and national colleagues to deliver freshwater nature recovery projects, developing effective solutions to achieve more for wetland environments
  • Champion the use of nature based solutions for enhancing freshwater protected sites and the farmed environment. 
  • Provision of oversight, technical advice and risk management relating to freshwater casework and major projects on protected sites and across our priority landscapes.
  • Contribute to the leadership of engagement and relationship management with key partners and landowners. Ensure joined up delivery of environmental opportunities through our advice to these stakeholders
  • Provide technical leadership on ecological issues, maintaining an overview of the delivery of water related Protected Sites casework and Farm Advice
  • Provide mentoring and training to grow the capability and capacity of our teams to provide technical water advice, and create resilience in this work area

 Technical/specialist knowledge

  • Understanding of the challenges affecting our water environment e.g. climate change, drought, flooding, abstraction, pollution etc.
  • Have good knowledge of freshwater/wetland ecology and systems, understand how those ecosystems function, and be able to recognise and advise on impacts which could affect their resilience
  • Understand the use of Habitats Regulations and give appropriate consent, assent and advice
  • Identify and apply relevant planning and environmental legislation, policies and processes to deliver effective and proportionate evidence-based solutions and advice
  • Understand the environmental value of designated sites and explain that to partners, stakeholders and customers.
  • Knowledge of water supply, quality and resource protection issues
  • Ability to oversee complex technical cases/issues in the team

Locations

Natural England is adopting hybrid working – which means our staff work from a flexible range of locations, encompassing home, offices (ours and our partners) and relevant sites. All new staff will be formally linked to one of our 25 offices across England and the expectation is that all new staff will be able to access their local office to be part of the community of staff in their geographical area. Full time staff are expected to attend their associated office for a minimum of one day a week. Staff members are required to carry out all their duties working in this way and cannot do so from an

overseas location at any time. Travel expenses will be paid if work related travel is required but does not apply to travel between home and your associated office.
