The Drinking Water Operations Specialist (DWOS) position utilizes their specialized technical expertise and experience to support drinking water systems located across Alberta. This exciting and rewarding work is carried out within the framework of provincial legislation, policy and the current business plan. Building a collaborative environment, you will work closely with system owners and operators, regional compliance and approval staff to meet the desired outcome of safe drinking water for all Albertans. Applying your strong systems thinking your responsibilities include assisting drinking water treatment plant operators and owners with continuous improvement of potable water quality, educate waterworks personnel and owners on the full spectrum of source to tap drinking water protection and work with Regional Health Authorities to mitigate situations where public health may be threatened. Willing to face challenges, you often work independently, employing your sound judgment and decision-making skills to overcome obstacles to achieve successful outcomes.
As the DWOS, you will:
- Identify drinking water treatment process enhancement opportunities for surface water, groundwater under direct influence (GUDI) and groundwater to pursue continuous improvement and performance measurement.
- Ensuring quality assurance and control by researching, sampling, testing, tracking, and analyzing data while making recommendations for enhancements in drinking water treatment operations.
- Utilizing your strong attention to detail, prepare reports, recommendations, and briefing materials, to management and/or external stakeholders for information and/or decisions through clear and concise communication.
- Review annual reports to identify trends in chemical parameters.
- Assist operators in identifying how recent wildfire activity within their source watershed may impact their drinking water treatment systems.
You will also provide public health risk assessments, risk mitigation strategies and emergency preparedness recommendations to ensure that changes are delivered in accordance with departmental, government and industry objectives. You will interact with all waterworks systems within a set geographic boundary; extensive fieldwork is required.
To be successful in the position, you will be required to understand drinking water technical terms and analyze concepts to have the ability and agility to deliver timely service to Albertans. Strong interpersonal, verbal, written, and visual communication skills are key to this role, including a proven ability to develop networks and communicate complex and technical drinking water treatment concepts in a concise and understandable manner to a variety of audiences, including senior executives. Strong research and analytical skills as well as the ability to provide innovative ideas, problem solving and manage projects is essential.
Qualifications
Required:
- Two-year technical diploma in a related field such as Engineering Technology or Water and Wastewater Operations.
- Seven years related experience in drinking water industry.
- Candidates must have a valid class 5 driver’s license.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Assets:
- Directly related experience with drinking water treatment processes and regional transmission systems is preferred.
- Experience with the application of the Water Act and the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, associated regulations and codes of practice, and Provincial and Federal standards and guidelines would be considered assets.
- Working knowledge of the impact of wildfire activity on source water and drinking water treatment processes.
- Eligible for membership with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET).
Candidates with lesser experience will be considered at a lower level.

Notes
- This is 2 year temporary position.
- Monday – Friday, 36.25 hours per week.
- In this role, you will be working in an office and field setting. However, you may be required to conduct field visits when necessary and to attend meetings within and outside the Region. You will have regular and on-going contact with regional staff, departmental specialists, representatives from other ministries and agencies, industry and municipal officials and the general public. Field work may include working with operators at water treatment and distribution systems. Field work is expected to be approximately 25% of the time but may vary seasonally.
