The Department of Water Resources (DWR) is looking for an experienced Hydrogeologist with a strong interest and demonstrated experience in quantitative hydrogeology and groundwater modeling to manage and advance the groundwater modeling program and quantitative hydrologic tools in the Water Appropriation Division with the Department of Water Resources.
Additionally, the position will require mentoring team members in quantitative hydrogeology and groundwater modeling.

The salary range for this position is $7,500 – $8,600 per month (dependent upon experience).
Duties and Tasks:
- Develop and implement numerical groundwater models of aquifers in assigned areas of North Dakota to make management decisions and draft recommendations on groundwater availability, additional appropriation, sustainability, and drought planning.
- Develop and advance the hydrologic analysis tools for the Department of Water Resources.
- Mentor and assist other team members in the conceptualization, problem solving, and, implementing groundwater models in making water resource management decisions.
- Plan and oversee test hole drilling and observation well installation in assigned areas as part of the ongoing Department of Water Resources water resource data collection program.
- Provide technical advice for the Department of Water Resources on water resource issues.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Master of Science or PhD degree in the field of hydrogeology, geology, hydrology, engineering or closely related field with an emphasis in groundwater modeling with two years of applicable experience, or a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of hydrogeology, geology, hydrology, engineering, or closely related field with at least five years of applicable experience working in the field of hydrogeology with an emphasis in groundwater modeling.
- Groundwater flow modeling (e.g. MODFLOW or FEFLOW) experience, pre-/post processing software experience (e.g. GMS, Groundwater Vistas, Visual MODFLOW).
- Acceptable driving record.
- Willingness to periodically travel and conduct field investigations as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with GIS and programming experience.
- Working experience with Prior Appropriation Doctrine.
- Experience with implementing groundwater models for use in making regulatory decisions or recommendations.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and through public speaking and presentations.
- Experience with technical report writing.
