The German Toilet Organization e. V. (GTO) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation based in Berlin that is active in the fields of development cooperation, humanitarian aid, health and environmental protection, especially in the area of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

GTO ist looking for a project coordinator or expert for the GTO component of a humanitarian consortium project with 2 partner organisations from the German WASH network.

Job postition: Project Coordinator / Expert WASH & Climate Change (f/m/d)

Location: Berlin/remote

Period: 2 years

 

Project summary:

The project is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office on the topic of WASH in 12 countries with three project partners, including the GTO. The objectives of the project are:

  • Better integration of climate aspects into WASH humanitarian aid projects
  • Greening the humanitarian work of NGOs with WASH activities
  • Strengthening and integrating gender and inclusion aspects
  • Advocacy on these issues
  • Networking and exchange between project actors

The GTO plays a role in the project in the areas of capacity building (training of trainers), the promotion of knowledge exchange between the project actors, in the conceptual development of content & materials as well as in the implementation of measures in the areas of advocacy and policy dialogue. The focus is on topics such as anticipatory disaster preparedness & prevention, climate change adaptation & mitigation as well as gender and inclusion in the WASH sector.

Job tasks:

Supporting two well-known humanitarian aid organisations in designing and implementing measures to mainstream the following issues in WASH projects:

  • Climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas mitigation
  • Improving environmental sustainability and greening
  • Strengthening gender and inclusion aspects

Within the framework of the above-mentioned project, you will be responsible for the coordination and, to a large extent, the technical implementation of the GTO’s contribution to this project. This includes:

  • Identifying specific needs and planning the implementation of packages of measures in cooperation with project partners and other stakeholders.
  • Preparation, implementation and follow-up of various consultation and knowledge exchange workshops
  • Conceptual development of necessary documents, training materials and tools based on the current state of knowledge on the above-mentioned topics
  • Design and implementation of various training courses on the relevant topics
  • Tendering/awarding of project measures and supervision of consultants
  • Travelling to project countries for workshops or to support partners on site (as required)
  • Communication and coordination with project management and project partners
  • Preparation of interim reports and where-used lists

Other optional tasks:

  • Conducting GTO training courses at home and abroad on various WASH topics in development cooperation and humanitarian emergency and transitional aid.
  • Development and implementation of new training courses on various topics and current WASH sector trends
  • Conceptual work on capacity development in the WASH sector

Qualifications:

  • Degree or comparable qualification in a field related to humanitarian aid or development cooperation
  • Knowledge and experience in WASH, humanitarian aid, climate change, environmental protection and inclusion. Experience in capacity development, advocacy and governance is an advantage
    • at least 2 years of experience in WASH projects abroad
    • at least 2 years of project experience in humanitarian aid abroad
  • Relevant experience in the following thematic areas is desirable
    • Climate adaptation and greenhouse gas mitigation
    • Greening
    • Adult education (didactics, methods, facilitation)
    • online trainings
  • Experience in project management and in dealing with public donors, incl. the preparation of proofs of funds used
  • Business fluent in German and English; knowledge of French and Spanish is desirable
  • High level of teamwork, excellent communication skills and initiative
  • strong social and intercultural skills
  • independent and goal-oriented work
  • Flexibility, reliability, ability to work under pressure and sense of responsibility
  • willingness to travel to sometimes politically unstable project countries
  • Very good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and internet use, affinity with technology is an advantage
