NIWA is a dynamic research organisation and New Zealand’s largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater, and marine science. Our core purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand’s aquatic resources and environments, to provide an understanding of climate and the atmosphere, and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.
NIWA Field Teams consists of Environmental Monitoring Technicians who are the core capability for providing highly skilled expertise in the design, maintenance, and operation of environmental sensing systems (including related data processing and analytics tasks).
What we’re looking for:
This position based in our Twizel Field Team, will encompass work maintaining data monitoring networks across the South Canterbury-Mackenzie-Central Otago regions. If you are a Technician with a positive customer service ethic, who can demonstrate good data and technical skills, and enjoys working within a team dedicated to enhancing environmental monitoring and information services for a leading NZ science organisation, then this is the opportunity is for you!
What you will bring:
- A relevant tertiary qualification or experience in environmental monitoring (hydrology, water quality or meteorology),
- Demonstrated competency in technical, instrumentation or data processing and analytical skills,
- A love of the great outdoors, and ability to work safely in a range of remote field environments.
- The capability to expand on and learn new technical skill sets,
- Confidence around water (rivers, lakes, and sea; swimming ability is preferred),
- A current NZ driver’s license, and
- Excellent people-communication skills.
This position will encompass a range of expectations and responsibilities relevant to the applicant’s technical experience and expertise, with associated training and development provided. Occasional travel to various South Island regions for scheduled work when directed is a requirement.
