Established in 1980, TNC’s Hawai‘i program has forged partnerships to manage over 2 million acres of natural lands and has grown to include Palmyra Atoll. We currently manage 14 preserves and other sites in Hawai‘i and Palmyra Atoll. In Hawai‘i, we work with government agencies, private landowners, businesses, community partners and local stakeholders to protect and restore Hawai‘i’s native watershed forests, coral reefs, and nearshore fisheries for both their ecological value and the many benefits they provide to people. At Palmyra Atoll, a National Wildlife Refuge 1,000 miles south of Hawai‘i, we facilitate research in this living laboratory to better understand and address global questions around sustainable fisheries and resilience to climate change.

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The Fisheries Specialist (Specialist) engages fishers from state to local levels to find common ground and viable solutions to fisheries management needs, including through The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) work with community-led fisheries stewardship initiatives. These initiatives bring communities and the state government together to develop place-based fisheries management plans informed by local traditional practices and ʻike kūpuna (knowledge of the elders).TNC’s approach aims to provide equitable access for the community to fisheries information to assess the health of their fishery and support community decisions on stewardship pathways, and meet community and state goals for ʻāina momona (abundant food resources), including sustainable harvest for food security and reef health.
The Specialist brings their knowledge of fishing and Hawaiian traditional practices to support the fisheries management work of The Nature Conservancy Hawaiʻi and Palmyra. Working closely with TNC island programs and staff supporting local community groups and state partners, the Specialist assists by training community members on monitoring methods of fisheries, facilitating community-led fisheries planning meetings, writing community-led fisheries plans, and communicating closely with state partners. The Specialist builds and fosters relationships with fishers to enhance TNC’s ability to facilitate the development of fisheries management plans that incorporate their needs and perspectives.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- BA/BS degree in natural resource management (or other relevant degree, such as focused on biocultural resource management, Hawaiian studies, or fisheries) and 5 years of relevant experience with traditional fisheries and fisheries science management practices (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Detailed knowledge of common fisheries species in Hawai‘i, as well as current and traditional fishing and fisheries management practices and experience discussing fishing and fisheries with diverse audiences.
- Experience working closely with community and government partners in Hawai‘i on natural resource management using local fishing knowledge and/or science to advance sustainable fishing goals.
- Experience communicating effectively with diverse audiences, including communities, fishers, scientists, and/or natural resources managers in writing and/or verbally.

SALARY INFORMATION
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $60,000 – 70,000 for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA and state is Hawai’i. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate’s location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
