Postdoctoral position in surface hydrology, with focus on modeling human-water systems

Uppsala University

Uppsala, Sweden 🇸🇪

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden´s largest and most versatile department of its kind with approximately 280 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural science and technology with social science. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; petrology, mineralogy and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By investigating the history of Earth, we understand how our planet has developed over time and how sustainable development benefits from this knowledge. Duties
Within the framework of a recently granted EU project (TRANSCEND), we are announcing a postdoctoral position. The project aims to study and model the interactions between drought, water scarcity and society in a changing climate. Human societies strongly rely on access to water resources, which are essential to support livelihoods and provide favourable conditions for sustainable development. While benefiting from water services and struggling with drought and water scarcity, humans also alter the hydrological regime by building dams, canals, levees, etc… The purpose of this project is to improve the modelling of human-water interactions, and simulating future dynamics emerging from the feedbacks between social and hydrological processes. The researcher will be placed at Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences, Programme for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences (LUVAL) and collaborate with CNDS (Centre of Natural Hazards and Disaster Science) in Uppsala.

Requirements
PhD degree in hydrology, environmental analysis, water resources engineering  or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the above area. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Additional qualifications
Experience of work with modelling and programming skills are merits for this position.
