This position provides supervision and licensed professional oversight, and functions as the senior provincial expert in the field of mine contact water and effluent management, mitigations, and treatment to support delivery of environmental protection services, primarily to the Mining team and other authorizations team within the ROB.  The position is responsible for managing staff and financial resources, managing stakeholder relations, applying legislation policies and professional standards in a consistent manner, participating in policy development, providing technical training, and overseeing program delivery and technical and professional projects as part of the BC Mining regulatory continuum serving the province.  In addition to serving the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, the position is also a key support to the Environmental Assessment Office and the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation for mine contact water and effluent management, mitigations, and treatment expertise related to proposed and active mining projects.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geoscience, Engineering, or Environmental Sciences and 7 years of related experience; or
  • Master’s degree in Geoscience, Engineering, or Environmental Sciences and 5 years of related experience.
  • Preference will be given to:
    • Candidates with postgraduate degrees in engineering (civil, chemical, geological, metallurgical environmental), preferably with specialization in the field of active and passive water treatment or metallurgical and/or heavy industry processes.
    • Candidates with related experience in the mining sector, including: experience with passive and active mine wastewater treatment design, operation and maintenance, wastewater quality assessment, water quality predictions, water quality modelling and the prevention/mitigation of water quality impacts for major mining or heavy industry projects.

Related Experience includes the following:

  • Preparing and/or reviewing major development proposals submitted under the Environmental Assessment Act or Mines Act or Environmental Management Act in British Columbia.
  • Design, operation, maintenance of wastewater treatment, including, with preferably some experience in the mining or heavy industry sector.
  • Environmental, civil engineering and or waste management as it relates to treatment of wastes and effects on the environment.
  • Solving complex technical problems related to mine contact water, effluent management, mitigations, and treatment.
  • Developing management plans, operational plan, maintenance plans, procedures for mine contact water, effluent management, mitigations, and treatment.
  • Leading or coordinating interdisciplinary projects.
  • Producing technical reports.
  • Interpreting and analyzing maps and data.
  • Working cooperatively with agencies, other levels of government, and the public.

Provisos /Willingness statement(s):

  • Must be able to meet the transportation needs of the position, i.e. maintain a BC Class 5 Drivers License
  • Must be physically able to conduct field work
  • Willingness to travel
  • Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends and holidays, when required.

Professional Association:

  • Registered or immediately* eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (* immediate eligibility is defined as a transfer of professional membership from a recognized Canadian jurisdiction or full membership within 3 months of employment) as Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist.
