The Department’s dam safety team is responsible for regulating water dams in Queensland. We set and regulate the standards that dam owners must comply with to protect the community. The team of 11 engineers are responsible for conducting dam site audits, assessing and approving failure impact assessments and emergency action plans, participating in technical review of dam projects, attending engineering workshops and inspections, actively searching for and assessing new dams, and providing technical support during wet weather events. This is the largest engineering team in the Department.
We also develop policies and guidelines, contribute to the Department’s broader water infrastructure oversight responsibilities, conduct training and education programmes, and actively engage with industry to improve dam safety management. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, Dam Safety, the role requires you to lead an engineering team and deliver high-quality engineering outcomes.
Key Duties and Accountabilities
• Manage and lead a team of professional and technical persons to support the implementation of best practice dam safety within the regulatory framework of the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008 and other relevant legislation.
• Provide high-level technical reviews of dam safety documentation and associated engineering assessments, completed by both internal and external engineers and other professionals and make recommendations regarding the compliance of this documentation with relevant legislation, guidelines and industry standards.
• Provide advice and liaise with dam owners, stakeholders and departmental staff regarding departmental legislation, policy and guidelines relating to the regulation of referable dams.
• Research, investigate and analyse complex issues, including undertaking audits, to determine compliance with legislative requirements and dam safety conditions; and prepare reports and briefs as required.
• Review or undertake numerical (hydrological and hydraulic) modelling projects relating to dam safety assessments.
• Inspect water supply dams in response to known or suspected dam safety impacts or public enquiries and provide accurate information to the Director of Dam Safety.
• Participate in developing and implementing dam safety policies, guidelines and standards.
• Promote dam safety in Queensland by developing networks and consulting with internal staff, other government agencies, key stakeholders, the community and other interested parties on dam safety issues.
