State of Idaho Opportunity

Position:

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring a Regional Hydrogeologist for the Pocatello Regional Office.

Salary Range: $33.00 – $36.86

Responsibilities:

Provide hydrological technical support to the Pocatello Regional DEQ Ground Water Program issues in general, specific Solid Waste and General Remediation projects include seven county landfills, local phosphate manufacturing plants (e.g., P4, Conda Phosphate Operations (CPO), Don, FMC, former Ker-McGee . . .) and oversight of monitoring data for ten phosphate mines with Points of Compliance determinations. Areas of technical support include:

· Municipal solid waste siting applications, ground water data review

· Hydrological support for cleanup of regional phosphate processing plants under Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action, or state Remedial Action administrative agreements

· Regional ground water issues

· Phosphate mining points of compliance

· General Remediation sites

Manage, review and evaluate submitted municipal and nonmunicipal facility siting and design documents for contaminant fate and transport pathways. submitted water quality data.

Evaluate ground water monitoring trends, assess water quality, predict the transport of pollutants for CERCLA, RCRA, General remediation sites, apply long-term control and cleanup technologies as needed.

Interpret and apply federal and state environmental statutes, rules, and regulations to ensure facility compliance.

Support, coordinate, and collaborate with federal and regional CERCLA, RCRA, and state general remediation project coordinators on the following:

· Water quality investigations

· Risk assessment and remediation of hazardous substance releases

· Records of decision

· Remedial design

· Remedial action

· Five-year reviews

· Engineering evaluations/cost assessments, (i.e., collection, management, and interpretation of groundwater, groundwater and surface water interactions, and drinking water monitoring projects).

Represent DEQ and state needs in discussions with federal, state, or local government representatives regarding planning and implementation activities in the areas of aquifer assessment, aquifer protection, and remediation as outlined above.

Required Specialty Minimum Qualification

Must have education and experience in the areas of aquifer assessment, aquifer protection, ground water or surface and drinking water pollution, such as designing, reviewing or implementing any of the following: water contamination investigations, ground water remediation projects, TMDL evaluations, ground water and surface or drinking water monitoring projects. Typically met by possession of a Bachelor’s degree with coursework in either geology, hydrogeology, geophysics, environmental science, geochemistry, environmental health, environmental or civil engineering, soil science, or in a closely related field AND approximately three (3) years of full-time work experience in the areas of aquifer assessment, aquifer protection, ground water or surface and drinking water pollution; such as designing, reviewing or implementing any of the following: water contamination investigations, ground water remediation projects, TMDL evaluations, ground water and surface or drinking water monitoring projects. OR Possession of a Master’s degree in any of the previously listed fields AND approximately two (2) years of full-time work experience performing the previous examples of work.

Physical Requirements:

· Ability to sit and work on a computer for 2-4 hours at a time.

· Ability to bend and reach for filing purposes.

· Some periods of heavy reading and typing are required.

· Ability to lift 30 pounds when working with file boxes.

· Some travel may be required.

· Ability to climb ladders, staircases, work on uneven terrain.

· Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds over rough terrain.

· Ability to work in adverse or inclement weather.

· Ability to work in extreme hot or cold temperatures both outside and inside.

· Field sites may involve working near and with drilling rigs, backhoes, trucks and other large equipment in rough terrain.

· Occasional travel required.

· May work in the vicinity of loud noise.

· May come into contact with hazardous waste/materials.

· Ability to obtain 24-hour Hazwopper certification and maintain annual refresher.

Required Licensure or Certifications:

· Professional Geologist (PG)

Other Requirements:

· Valid driver’s license
