Job Summary
This position will assist with hydrogeological investigations in support of DNR’s County Groundwater Atlas (CGA). This position will assist with field work in the following areas: groundwater, lake and spring water chemistry sampling, testing of wells and springs, geophysics data acquisition, surveying, groundwater level monitoring, field verification of springs, and exploratory drilling. This position may also assist other units or work groups to carry out field work such as well installation and maintenance and aquifer testing. This position will process and evaluate the data collected in the field, mine information from existing reports to enter data in appropriate electronic formats and create draft reports.
This position requires overnight travel 3 to 4 days per week up to several times per month and 4 to 5 days per week up to several times per year during the field season. This position may be eligible to telework on a full or part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete a telework agreement.

- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geological Engineering, Hydrology, Forest Hydrology, Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, Soil Science, Water Resources Management, Hydraulics, Environmental Science, Earth Science, or related major.
- Transcript requirement:
- Three hydrology qualifying courses in the areas of: Hydrology, Hydraulics, Hydrogeology/Groundwater Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Hydrologic Modeling, Watershed Management, Groundwater, Fluid Mechanics, Fluvial Geomorphology, OR
- Two hydrology qualifying courses and two courses in: Geology, Geomorphology, Geochemistry, Geography, Limnology, Erosion and Sediment Control, Environmental Engineering, Soils.
- Ability to use basic computer software (database, spreadsheet, and word processing applications) to compile, analyze and present hydrologic data.
- The ability to use GIS tools, including ArcGIS, to compile and analyze hydrologic and/or geologic data.
- Ability to safely use hand-tools and power tools and work safely with tools of the trade and geophysics equipment.
- Ability to safely handle and use potentially hazardous chemicals required for water chemistry sampling and analysis.
- Ability to communicate and work well with the project teams and the public, including having good human relation and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in one of the following disciplines: Civil, Environmental Engineering; Geography; Geology; Geophysics; Geochemistry or Environmental Chemistry; Hydrogeology; Natural Resources and Environmental Studies; or equivalent.
- Knowledge of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, and an ability to operate engineering grade surveying equipment.
- Experience conducting groundwater measurements and collecting groundwater samples for water chemistry analysis.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of local, state, and federal water laws.
- Experience driving with trailers and heavy equipment.
Additional Requirements
This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record.
