Background:

Water stress is a critical issue caused by the growing demand for freshwater resources combined with the impacts of climate change. Water stress poses significant challenges to the sustainability and well-being of communities. This is also exacerbated by factors such as population growth, erratic rainfall, and agricultural demands.

FH India is commencing a study on water stress aims to generate valuable insights into the causes, consequences, and solutions related to water stress. The study will contribute to the development of effective strategies for sustainable water management and help mitigate the impacts of water stress on communities and overall ecosystem. The study will employ a multidisciplinary approach to gather comprehensive data and provide valuable insights into addressing water stress challenges.

Objectives of the study:

This study aims to investigate the causes, consequences, and potential solutions for water stress in the region. By examining factors such as water security, quality, quantity, topography, geo-hydrology, community groups, gender dynamics, and rainfall patterns, the study will generate valuable insights to inform sustainable water management strategies.

• Assess the extent of water stress in Malanpur, Bhind, focusing on water security, quality, and quantity indicators. Examine the local topography and geo-hydrological characteristics to understand their influence on water availability and accessibility.
• Investigate the socio-economic and environmental effects of water stress on communities, with a particular focus on the role of community groups and gender dynamics.
• Analyse historical rainfall data to identify patterns and trends in order to better understand the impact of climate variability on water stress.
• Investigate the root causes and drivers of water stress in Malanpur, Bhind, Madhya Pradesh
• Assess the socio-economic, environmental, and health impacts of water stress on communities, ecosystems, and economies.
• Identify innovative technologies, policies, and practices for sustainable water management and stress reduction. Develop strategies for effective water resource allocation, conservation, and resilience building in water-stressed regions.
• Suggest way forward to raise awareness and promote community engagement in water conservation efforts.
• Develop evidence-based recommendations for effective water resource management and mitigation strategies.

Position summary:

The Principal Investigator (PI) will lead and drive the study. This role will require a skilled researcher with expertise in hydrology, water resource assessment, and project management, who can work closely with a multidisciplinary team and coordinate with stakeholders including municipal corporation to address critical water stress challenges in the region.

Key Responsibilities:

Research Leadership:

• Develop and refine the research objectives, methodologies, and data collection strategies for the study.
• Lead the planning, execution, and supervision of fieldwork, data collection, and laboratory analysis related to water availability, usage, and stress factors.

Data Collection and Analysis:

• Oversee the collection of hydrological data, including precipitation, groundwater levels, surface water flow, and water quality parameters.
• Utilize advanced tools and techniques for data analysis, modeling, and simulation to assess water stress patterns and trends.

Stakeholder Engagement:

• Collaborate with local communities, municipal corporation in Malanpur, government departments, and other relevant stakeholders to understand water stress concerns and gather local insights.
• Facilitate meetings, and interviews to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the water stress landscape.

Mitigation Strategies:

• Analyze research findings to identify potential water stress mitigation strategies, including water conservation, efficient irrigation techniques, and infrastructure improvements.
• Develop actionable recommendations for project, policymakers and stakeholders to enhance water resource resilience.

Publication and Dissemination:

• Prepare high-quality reports, and presentations.
• Disseminate research outcomes with donor and government.

Project Management:

• Create and manage project plans, timelines, ensuring the timely completion of project milestones.
• Collaborate with field assistants and field teams to ensure smooth data collection.

Qualifications:

• Masters in Hydrology, Environmental Science, Water Resources Engineering, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience in leading and managing hydrological or water-related research projects.
• Proficiency in data collection techniques, hydrological modeling, and GIS tools.
• Strong analytical skills for interpreting complex hydrological data and trends.
• Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English and Hindi.
• Familiarity with water stress issues, particularly in the Madhya Pradesh region is a plus.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and engage effectively with stakeholders.

Location and Duration:

This position is based in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh with travel to project location in Malanpur and Bhind. The contract duration will be for 6 months.

COMPENSATION

Compensation levels at FH India are equivalent to market rates within the development sector. However, offers shall be based on salary history, relevant experience, qualification and budgetary provisions under project.
