Job description
Dr. Andrew Gray (thegraylab.org) in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Riverside is seeking 2 postdoctoral scholars for 2 funded projects focused on microplastic source, transport, and fate in urban river systems, with an expected duration of 2 years.
(1) The first postdoctoral scholar will play a leading role in research employing cutting-edge techniques to quantify and characterize microplastics in environmental samples. The successful candidate will be expected to modify and develop high-throughput techniques for microplastics analysis on chemical micro-imaging/scanning platforms including a mid-IR quantum cascade laser microscope. This project is supported by the Los Angeles County Safe Clean Water Program.
(2) The second postdoctoral scholar will play a leading role in the investigation of microplastic transport in streamflow and the evaluation of monitoring techniques using both field monitoring and experimental (flume) approaches. This project will be conducted in collaboration with the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, Dr. Vamsi Ganti (UC Santa Barbara), and a number of additional microplastic pollution experts.
Both postdocs will be expected and supported in presenting and publishing the results of this research at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. The initial appointments are for two years with a preferred start date in late summer/early fall, 2023.
