With significantly expanding operations and community partnerships, we are adding one new Technical Trainer and Project Coordinator position to our team, reporting to the Sr. Manager, Drinking Water. Our Environmental and Drinking Water Internship programs address the gap in access to water science training in Indigenous communities by integrating technical training with hands-on, project-based learning in partner communities. Project development and delivery are done in collaboration with community and tribal council partners and aim to address specific community goals (i.e., strengthen technical abilities in a band office, recruit, train young drinking water operators, and develop a network of water quality monitors). This position will support the delivery and expansion of our technical programming in line with this philosophy.

Wage: $52,000 – $70,000 (Some flexibility based on the level of experience)

This role is a remote work-from-home position. Candidates must be available to travel to Indigenous communities to deliver training workshops and to the Creemore, Ontario office located at 10 Francis Street East for critical meetings as required.
Responsibilities for this position include:
- Delivering water science-focused training sessions:
- Including fundamentals of water chemistry, water treatment and distribution, wastewater treatment and collection, hydrology, and aquatic ecology; sampling & monitoring parameters; site instrumentation and field protocols; data management & mapping of drinking water and environmental water quality data.
- Facilitating technical training sessions in a respectful, hands-on, project-based manner for adult Indigenous learners with diverse backgrounds.
- Instructional content creation and adaptation
- Providing subject matter expertise to the Instructional Design and Delivery team on topics such as water and wastewater treatment.
- Creating provincial adaptations to water and wastewater certification training specific to provinces outside of Ontario.
- Indigenous community collaboration & project coordination:
- Developing projects in collaboration with community partners.
- Supporting student recruitment, training, tutoring, and ongoing engagement with project partners and community members (e.g., band office managers, water treatment plant operators, environmental/lands and resources staff, Chief and Council, etc.).
- Coordinating daily work tasks (field-based and in treatment plant), exams, communicating with and mentoring students.
- Evaluations, internal/external reporting.
- Program refinement, adding to our manuals and documenting for future program iterations.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:
- Related degree, diploma, or certification in one or more fields: drinking water or wastewater treatment, water engineering, hydrology, water chemistry, aquatic ecology and/or environmental science.
- Subject matter expertise in water and wastewater certifications.
- Minimum of 2 years of technical field project experience.
- Teaching or training experience with mature Indigenous students (facilitating workshops with hands-on, project-based learning, developing curriculum, mentoring learners during work experience, etc.).
- Experience in drinking water, wastewater, surface water sampling, monitoring and laboratory testing.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience in coordinating community projects and working with multiple stakeholders.
- Regular access to a vehicle & willingness to travel to northern Indigenous communities approximately 25% of the time.
- Class G (ON) / Class 5 (MB) or equivalent driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work effectively from home and on the road.
- Strong cultural sensitivity and awareness.
- Strong editing and proofreading skills with a meticulous eye for detail.
- Working knowledge of administrative and presentation software, including Google Suite, Drive and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work respectfully and collaboratively in a dynamic, multi-faceted team environment and independently.
- A willingness to continually expand one’s professional skill set, learn on the job, take on additional responsibilities as required and respond to and thrive in a dynamic work environment.
- Candidates must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada under relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
- A vulnerable sector security check is required as part of the hiring process.
The following are considered assets:
- Advanced/graduate degree in one of the fields of study noted above.
- Fluent in the French language, both written and verbal.
- Experience designing and delivering training content that is hands-on, experiential, and applied skills-based and provided in various mediums: face-to-face, outdoors, in-classroom and through e-learning.
- Experience with ArcGIS mapping software.
- Experience with mentoring mature students.
- Experience in designing water quality and/or hydrological sampling plans.
- Experience in data analysis and interpretation.
- Water and Wastewater Operator certifications/licenses relevant to the province of residence.
- Demonstrated track record of leadership experience and excellence.
- Experience with Indigenous community engagement.
