About the Role

The School of Geography is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer or Reader in Physical Geography or Environmental Science. We welcome applicants undertaking research that seeks to address global environmental challenges and will complement work by our Climate and Earth Surface Science research theme. This theme spans climate and environmental change; modelling planetary surfaces and processes; ecosystems and pollution; and resilient freshwater and marine systems. The successful candidate will also contribute to leadership within the School and to education across our undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes.

About You

You will hold a PhD in Physical Geography, Environmental Science or a related discipline and have a strong track record of high-quality research. You will have experience of designing and successfully delivering innovative and inclusive research-led teaching and a passion and commitment to delivering an outstanding student experience to a diverse student population. The level of appointment will depend on experience.

About the School

The School is recognised as an international centre for excellence in teaching and research across Geography, Environmental Science and Development. We were positioned joint tenth in the UK for the quality of our research outputs in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework and our undergraduate Geography programmes have recently been awarded accreditation by the Royal Geographical Society.

Our researchers benefit from a well-resourced Laboratory and Field Suite with facilities for geochemical analysis of sediments, soils and water (major elements, pollutants and nutrients) and greenhouse gases; microscopy of sediments and fossils (SEM, Microtomography); a Geospatial Lab for satellite image processing, photogrammetry and environmental modelling; and geomatics, remote sensing and environmental monitoring equipment including terrestrial and UAV lidar, ground penetrating radar, multispectral and thermal imaging UAVs, and flow and water quality sensors.

Opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration include cross-School research themes (e.g. Nature and Society), Faculty research centres (e.g. Centre for Environmental Change and Communities), and University Research Institutes (e.g. Digital Environment Research Institute).

The post is based at Mile End Campus in London. It is a full time, permanent appointment, with an expected start date of January 2024. The starting salary will be Grade 7, in the range of £61,896 – £69,114 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
