Job Summary

A dynamic role for a skilled analyst with excellent research and communication skills.

PROGRAM

The Water Protection and Sustainability Branch leads water and watershed-related strategic planning, policy, legislation, and science for B.C.  The branch supports the regional implementation of this work across the Natural Resource Sector and with health agencies.  The branch operates at a fast pace, on a broad range of issues and initiatives, and in a highly collaborative setting.  Our work is founded on Indigenous reconciliation principles and commitments, and we build on a range of partnerships with Indigenous groups, provincial agencies, other levels of government, stakeholders, and other watershed based organizations.  

The current work of the Branch includes development of a provincial Watershed Security Strategy and Fund, policy support for the water related legislation, support to treaty and other Indigenous processes, collaboration with Indigenous groups on watershed planning and governance, development of a Source to Tap Drinking Water Protection Strategy, development of water quality guidelines and objectives, and the science to support these initiatives. 

JOB OVERVIEW

The Water Policy Advisor develops and implements provincial water, watershed and natural resource sector policy, strategies, watershed governance models, legislation, and non-regulatory tools.  This role also provides policy advice to clients and supports training to help guide program, policy and legislative delivery to the natural resource sector. The Advisor draws on the strengths of analytical and conceptual thinking and problem solving while building relationships and strong teams to deliver on the priorities of agencies in the natural resource sector, health, local government and other ministries and programs.

Job Requirements:

  • Post-graduate degree in Natural Resources management, Environment, Sustainability, Public Administration, Public Policy, Law, Business Administration, or related field; OR
  • Under-graduate degree in the areas stated above PLUS 2 years directly related experience.

Related experience must include:

  • Experience providing expertise in the development of policy. Preference may be given to applicants with this experience in the areas of water or natural resource management.
  • Experience leading people. Preference may be given to applicants with experience supervising staff or leading teams.  
  • Experience researching, analyzing, and evaluating complex issues and information to assess the impact of a policy and/or strategic plan on an organization. Preference may be given to applicants with this experience in the areas of water or natural resource management.
  • Experience establishing, building, and maintaining collaborative working relationships with Indigenous groups, internal managers, internal staff and teams, external groups and/or other levels of government.
  • Experience producing complex and written documentation for senior decision-makers.

Provisos/Willingness Statements:

  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • A valid full BC driver’s licence (minimum class 5), or an equivalent class driver’s licence from another province or jurisdiction is preferred.
