Overview

About the Role

The School of Geography is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Physical Geography or Environmental Science on a three-year fixed-term teaching and scholarship contract. The successful candidate will deliver teaching on our undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes: BSc Geography, BSc Environmental Science and MSc Water and Environmental Management.

Our Physical Geography and Environmental Science curricula align with the main foci of our Climate and Earth Surface Science research theme: climate and environmental change; modelling planetary surfaces and processes; ecosystems and pollution; and resilient freshwater and marine systems. In addition to thematic teaching in one or more of these areas, the role will include contributions to developing student study skills, methodological teaching in field and laboratory environments, local and residential field courses, student research project supervision and student advising, as agreed with the Head of School.

About You

You will have a background in Physical Geography or Environmental Science, a proven track record of excellent educational delivery, and a passion and commitment to delivering an outstanding student experience.

We particularly welcome applications from people who identify as being from a Black, Asian or other minority ethnic group as these groups are underrepresented in Geography and Environmental Science. Queen Mary is committed to advancing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). Applications will be assessed using the University’s Equal Merit Provision framework.

The University holds a Silver Athena SWAN award for advancing gender equality, is a Stonewall Diversity Champion, and offers a number of development programmes including Springboard, Aurora and B-Mentor.

About the School

The School is recognised as an international centre for excellence in teaching and research across Geography, Environmental Science and Development. It is a welcoming and intellectually-vibrant home to a diverse body of almost 600 undergraduate and postgraduate students, 47 academic and research staff, and 12 Professional Services staff.

Our undergraduate Geography programmes have recently been awarded accreditation by the Royal Geographical Society. Teaching and learning within the School benefits from access to a well-resourced Laboratory and Field Suite, dedicated student computer labs and flexible learning spaces for small group teaching.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities including an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is a full time, fixed-term appointment for three years, with an expected start date of September 2023. The starting salary will be Grade 5-6, in the range of £47,178 – £58,595 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
