The UFZ
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our mission: Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.
The job
At the Department of Hydrogeology at UFZ we seek, starting 01.11.2023, a PostDoc (or advanced reseacher with Masters degree) with strong skills in the numerical simulation of reactive transport in groundwater to join a BMBF-funded collaborative research project on stimulated denitrification in flow through tank experiments and aquifers (https://www.cee.ed.tum.de/hydro/projects-ongoing/nitrat-lurch/).
Your tasks
- Simulation of reactive transport in groundwater
- Setting up reactive transport models for flow-through tank experiments and a field-test site
- Model based evaluation of gas-injection scenarios to stimulate in situ denitrification
- Model-based optimization of the configuration of a remediation scheme for nitrate pollution
- Preparation of scientific papers and reports
We offer
- Excellent technical facilities which are without parallel
- The freedom you need to bridge the difficult gap between basic research and close to being ready for application
- Work in inter-disciplinary, multinational teams and excellent links with national and international research networks
- A vibrant region with a high quality of life and a wide cultural offering for a balance between family and professional life
- Interesting career opportunities and an extensive range of training and further education courses
Your profile
The potential candidate should have a PhD or a strong MSc degree + work experience in hydrogeology, civil or environmental engineering, geo- or environmental sciences (with a focus on groundwater) and a strong background in numerical modeling of reactive transport in groundwater. The application should include a detailed CV (including names and addresses of two potential referees), a letter of motivation, pdf-copies of certificates and, if applicable, pdf-copies of relevant published work.
