The Climate and Sustainability Programme at ODI is working to build a more equitable world, underpinned by climate-compatible development and sustainable stewardship of natural resources. We use robust data to influence governance, policy and investment in ways that reduce poverty, inequality and environmental degradation. We support governments, communities and industries to secure just and sustainable transitions, drawing on our renowned expertise in energy, cities, agriculture, land, water, and the connections between them. ODI’s broader expertise and track record in macroeconomics, public/development finance, social inclusion and political economy means that we are exceptionally well-positioned to provide intellectual leadership and technical assistance on securing just energy transitions.

About the role

We are now recruiting a Principal Research Fellow or a Senior Research Fellow specialising in sustainable finance and/or just energy transitions to help lead and coordinate our broad portfolio of work in these areas. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Designing, fundraising for, conducting and managing high-quality, innovative projects, drawing on expertise across the institute;
  • Providing technical assistance and policy advice to senior decision-makers;
  • Participating in public affairs and representing the institute on major research and policy agendas, in line with the Institute’s overall strategy (which includes a dedicated pillar on tackling the climate, environment and biodiversity crisis).

Principal Research Fellow will be ODI is internationally recognised as a leading authority in their particular research or policy field. They will have made a significant and distinctive contribution to sustainable development, in particular sustainable finance and/or energy transitions, manifest through high-quality publications (demonstrating through the quality of the journal or level of citations) and/or policy influence (demonstrated through compelling stories of change backed up by credible references). Principal Research Fellows will also have a strong track record of team building and business development.

Senior Research Fellow at ODI will be widely recognised as an established authority in their particular research or policy field. They will have a substantial and distinctive body of research, advisory work and/or public affairs to their name, plus several years of experience in leadership positions.

About you

Essential

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Internationally recognised expert in their chosen field.
  • A post-graduate degree in relevant discipline, preferably a PhD.
  • Extensive and deep knowledge of key issues and organisations in relevant field.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in policy-oriented research and/or direct policy formulation at a senior level, demonstrated by a track record of influential publications and/or delivery of major policy initiatives.
  • Experience of leadership and management at senior level, in an academic or policy environment.
  • Strong track record of engagement in major global policy processes (such as United Nations, multilateral development banks or G7/G20 initiatives) and/or with politicians and top-level officials in economies at diverse levels of income.

Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Capacity to write clearly and persuasively, and first-class verbal communication skills.
  • A demonstrated capacity for policy advisory and or public affairs work, based on a rigorous approach, and an innovative and creative communications ability.
  • Ability to translate research and policy ideas into compelling and fundable projects and initiatives.
  • Skills in negotiation, listening, communication of ideas, problem solving, decision making.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, providing both leadership and mentoring for less senior staff.
  • Proven organisational and time management skills, including managing a complex and varied workload.
  • Proven ability to fundraise and build up a coherent portfolio of research and advisory work.

Desirable

  • Fluency or competency in a language or languages other than English.
  • Experience of working in international organisations and developing/emerging economies.
  • A PhD on a relevant topic.
  • Regular contributions to academic journals, including in an editorial capacity.
