The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state park systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, golf courses, swimming pools, skating rinks, trails and parkways and more.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Water Supply Protection’s Quabbin/Ware Region seeks qualified applicants for the position of Environmental Analyst II.


DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

-Assists with hydrologic monitoring, maintenance and troubleshooting of DWSP stream gages, processing of historical stream stage records, development of rating curves, and data acquisition.

-Uses R/GIS based or other software/tools to produce statistics, charts, maps, or other figures to be used in water quality reporting.

-Assists with water quality/hydrology data management and workflows by writing and maintaining scripts to process and import data to the water quality database, developing new tools to facilitate field data collection and data review and QA/QC.

-Conducts routine and non-routine reservoir and tributary sampling, along with review and processing of water quality data.

-Helps update SOPs for water quality monitoring and data management tasks.  

-Maintains inventory of lab and field equipment, including calibration and maintenance records.

-Performs equipment calibration and maintenance.

-Assists with writing portions of the annual water quality report.

-Investigates water quality problems as needed; reviews water quality data to identify potential new issues.  Responds to reports of hazardous materials releases and other environmental threats as needed.

-May participate in watershed surveys and aquatic invasive species fieldwork to assist other Environmental Quality staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Computer skills: Microsoft Office, R, SQL, Onset HOBOware software, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS.

-Experience calibrating and using water-quality and water-quantity monitoring field sensors.

-Experience with fieldwork and basic navigation.

-Experience with operating motorized boats.

This is a hybrid position; however, the chosen candidate is expected to work a minimum of three days in the office during field work seasons.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health, of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the following substitutions.

Substitutions: 

I. An Associate’s degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* 

II. A Bachelor’s degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*  

III. A Graduate degree with a major in environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for the required experience.* 

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
