 Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado in Boulder has an opening for a hydrographic survey data manager (temporary researcher) working with the Ocean and Coastal Mapping Team at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). The candidate for this position will manage the assimilation, quality assurance, storage, and archival of hydrographic, bathymetric, and acoustic imagery data received for the NOAA National Ocean Service (NOS) hydrographic survey database, and NOS hydrographic survey metadata database.

CIRES conducts collaborative research with NOAA on the archive, analysis and processing of data that describe the seafloor and subsurface. This includes ingesting consistent, quality-controlled data sets, applying analytical tools to assess and monitor changes in the coasts and oceans, and supporting informed decision-making and aiding in the understanding of coastal and ocean conditions and their impact on the environment, economies, and societies. This position is co-located with staff at NCEI, David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, Colorado, and supports the CIRES Research Theme of Advance Modeling and Observing Systems. NCEI is a part of the US Department of Commerce (US DOC), NOAA, National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). NCEI’s mission is to provide scientific stewardship of and timely access to global geophysical data from satellites and other sources to promote, protect, and enhance the Nation’s economy, security, environment, and quality of life.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) is responsible for hosting and providing access to one of the most significant archives on Earth, with comprehensive oceanic, atmospheric, and geophysical data. From the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun and from million-year-old sediment records to near real-time satellite images, NCEI is the Nation’s leading authority for environmental information. NCEI’s Boulder, Colorado office holds and preserves the Nation’s treasure trove of marine geophysical data and information. This includes seafloor mapping data acquired by hydrographic, oceanographic, and industry vessels and platforms during surveys or while on passage. NCEI maintains the National Ocean Service (NOS) hydrographic data and product archive, as well as the Hydrographic Survey Metadata Database (HSMDB). Data and products acquired by the Office of Coast Survey provide coverage of U.S. coastal waters and the exclusive economic zone. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Coordinate with NOAA/NOS on the development of data management software, code, and procedures for the databases.
  • Provide expert assistance to all users of the databases. Field large volume data requests from commercial users such as Garmin, Orsted, Bedrock, and others for commercial and blue economy applications.
  • Assist in program coordination with senior scientists at NCEI and NOS
  • Direct dissemination of data to customers.
  • Provide backup and security for NOS hydrographic, multi-beam, and seabed data.
  • Provide timely archival services for Coast Survey hydrographic data as the final step in the acquisition-to-archive process.
  • Investigate and test the latest technologies for survey data management.
  • Participate in the development of new product applications as described by NOAA/NOS. 

 What You Should Know

  • This is a temporary position and is ineligible for benefits besides those required by law. This position accrues 0.034 hour of sick leave for every hour worked.
  • The targeted start date for this position is by Sept 1, 2023, though may start sooner depending on federal clearance processing.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305, on a federal research campus.
  • Selected finalists will be required to pass a federal background check for site access.

 What We Can Offer

  • CIRES offers a generous compensation package.
  • The hourly hiring salary range for this position is $30.06 – $40.86. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
  • Relocation funds are not available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline with at least 2 years of directly relevant experience, OR Master’s degree in relevant scientific discipline.
  • Experience working with hydrographic data or seagoing experience where hydrographic data are collected.
  • Experience using scripting languages to automate data tasks, such as Python, Bash, JavaScript or similar.
