The Ministry of Forests is responsible for the stewardship of provincial Crown land and ensures the sustainable management of forest, wildlife, water and other land-based resources. This Research Section Head/Research Forest Hydrologist position provides supervision and professional oversight for the Skeena Regional Research Program, including managing staff and financial resources; managing stakeholder and partner relationships; applying legislation, policies, and professional standards in a consistent manner; and, participating in provincial policy development. This role oversees the delivery of the regional research program and leads applied-science research projects in their field of expertise (preferably forest hydrology).

Job Requirements:

  • Registered as a fully licensed professional with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area (i.e., Forest Professionals BC, BC Institute of Agrologists, Engineers and Geoscientists BC), or immediately eligible for registration. Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the BC association within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • A thesis-based PhD (preferred) in a forest hydrology related scientific field (including Silviculture, Forest Entomology, Climatology, Soil Science, Geomorphology), plus a minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience in natural resource, ecosystem or forest management; OR,
  • A thesis-based Master’s Degree in a forest hydrology related scientific field (including Silviculture, Forest Entomology, Climatology, Soil Science, Geomorphology), plus a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in natural resource, ecosystem or forest management. 
  • Experience supervising and leading technical and professional teams on projects or program delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, planning, and implementing research projects, including directing your own and other’s scientific work to achieve research objectives.
  • Experience producing technical reports and peer-reviewed research publications.


Provisos and Willingness Statements:

  • A valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
  • Must hold, or be willing and able to obtain, Level 1 First Aid Certification.
  • Willing and able to work outdoors in remote areas and in a variety of conditions.
  • Willing and able to fly in planes and helicopters.

About this Position:
This position can be based in any of the following Ministry of Forests’ offices: Smithers, Terrace, Burns Lake, Hazelton, Houston, Dease Lake.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
