Job description
Water is at the heart of everything we do, and with a changing climate, an increasingly important resource for people, business and wildlife. We play a crucial role in helping manage many competing demands and priorities.
We need an experienced water resource planner with the skills, experience and, importantly, personal drive and enthusiasm, to help shape West Midlands’ beautiful and diverse environments so we can unleash even more potential and meet future needs.
You will be passionately committed to the environment, a person with vision and strategic thinking, able to identify potential risks and opportunities and work effectively within our team environment to get things done. You will also be a good influencer and work closely with those who hold the key to change. Your development is important to us, so we often support further training to meet your needs and job requirements so you can flourish in the role.
You’ll work closely with a number of teams and Stakeholders within West Midlands Area and our National teams to help manage the River Severn and support our programme of projects to enhance our data and understanding of the Severn to improve future regulation. You will also help shape and deliver our strategic water resource options and plans. You will support our incident response which includes drought, flood risk, or other environmental incidents.
The team
You’ll join the Water Transfer Team, containing specialists in water resources, hydrology and drought planning, working across the West Midlands Area. We’re a team of experienced advisors central to environmental decision making, delivering integrated actions to solve complex problems and maximise benefits for people and wildlife.
We work with internal and external partners to collate, analyse and share data, providing the environmental evidence to inform our area’s priorities.
Experience/skills required
The successful candidate will have a good understanding of our business and environmental activities and have strong IT skills and can demonstrate specialist technical leadership.
You should be qualified to degree level in a relevant environmental discipline. Membership of, or working towards a membership of, a relevant professional institute (e.g., CIWEM) is desirable. Ideally, you will be experienced
- Strategic water resource planning, data analysis/research and/or modelling tools.
- Gathering, maintaining, quality-assuring data, ability to use variety of techniques to present data/information
- Ability to translate guidance and policy into language suitable for the audience
- Self-motivated and ability to work under own initiative, and as part of a cross-functional team. You will have good skills in prioritising and delivering work to required standards, working within the available resource will be essential.
- You will have great organisational skills/discipline and the ability to plan, track, deliver and evaluate own work
